Help! Easy to replace gas fire surround? (Pic!)

I have a very ugly gas fire in my living room with an alright pine mantelpiece. We have to keep the black hearth as we have no money to replace the floor.
What can we do to make it look better?
Can the insert just be replaced?
The major issue is the layout of the lounge is all wrong and the fireplace just adds to that. However, we can't just rip it all out (can we??!) as that would still leave the floor issue. Wall is bare plaster currently - will be crown spotlight (grey with very slight pinky tones)
Help and ideas please

Can you rip it out and reposition the sofa over it or something?

I don't think it's really ugly at all 😳

In fact where are you as I would happily take the very ugly wooden mantle off of you?

I don't hate it - as gas fires go it's really not a bad one. I'd be tempted to try and find some black matt fireproof paint to paint over the gold bits and maybe paint the mantle just one shade off the wall colour to try and make it less dominant in the room. Can you post a pic of its position in the room as there might be a way you can position furniture / mirrors to improve how it looks
