Emergency plumbing question

Hi there,

Single mum here and haven't got a clue about plumbing! I have a toilet with this type of system (see attached photo) and the water keeps over flowing and running into the toilet bowl. Does anyone know how to stop the flow? I think it's just a small adjustment!

The float (the blue bit) seems to have sunk! Hopefully it's just sticking on the stem. Try sliding it up and down a few times. For reference the you can adjust it position but if it's been OK previously it's not likely to suddenly need adjusting.

Thanks! Is that blue bit supposed to be higher then? Ive only moved into the house a week ago and too be honest I've heard the water running on and off for a while, but only just today it's been running constantly. I've now got an emergency plumber coming out tomorrow 😩 I hope the £70 I'm going to pay is worth it!

The blue bit is supposed to float on top of water. When cistern is full enough, the blue bit floats so high it hits a trigger that tells the cistern to stop filling with water. When you flush, the blue bit lowers, the water enters the cistern and it all starts again. If the blue bit gets stuck too low for any reason, the cistern keeps filling with water. Can you see if it is jammed? If you lift the blue bit as high as it will go the water should stop. Good luck!

The float usually screws in place so maybe it has moved a little and is sticking. Try and give it a twist to see if it is loose. You might be able to save yourself the emergency call out!

the water level in that cistern looks much too low. Which suggestrs to me that the flush valve is leaking, and the fill valve is valiantly but unsuccessfully attempting to fill the cistern.

1. look for an engraved line marked "water level" on the inside of the cistern, or failing that, a tidemark of dirt or limescale

2. identify the air-filled float on the fill valve and gently lift it with your fingers. Does it easily come up, and does the incoming water then stop?
