Moving home dealing with energy companies

I'm moving home.
I'm tearing my hair out I've been phoning people since 1600ish.

Still don't know who my energy suppliers are.

Can't get through to the gas one to confirm and make other arrangements as currently both gas and electric are on prepay which I want rid of (have landlords permission).

Electric suppliers (scottish power) seem to be my supplier but it may be someone else. They can't even find my address on their system!

The organisation that's supposed to maintain and manage the info for my area are...

Yep part of scottish power - also cannot find my address. After asking to speak to a supervisor THREE TIMES I finally speak to one. He's worked out the problem...another flat in the building I'm moving into has been listed twice with 2 different suppliers - for electricity - says it is the case sometimes that a property has 2 separate suppliers for the same fuel. I am sceptical as I've never heard of this.

But there's NO listing for my flat.

I'm currently on hold to my old energy company from previous property to obtain the information I need to be able to use comparison sites.

Can ANYONE advise how to sort this ridiculous muddle?

Prepay meters are a pain and I want off that method ASAP.

I was in credit with last company (who service wise were OK) and I've just received that credit into my account.

Don't suppose they can find your address from serial numbers on the prepay meters or numbers on the key cards?

No idea where key cards are part of reason for calling was to order new ones. I'm not actually there at the moment to get meter numbers.

Not strictly true. But sometimes the supplier is not the meter owner/meter operator.

Landlords can't help previous tenant gone already.

It's scottish power are the problem. Been over there today and dd called out EVERY number on the meters (just in case) so will call them tomorrow and try and sort it. Nightmare.

Dd is taller than me so could see to read the tiny numbers on meter which is placed around 7 foot high - I had similar problem in old place why do they put them up so bloody high??

What an awful experience. If you can move now I just joined BULB. It took less than 4 weeks to move and everything was so straightforward. I hated trying to get Scottish Power for anything but these guys seem to be easy to speak to and very helpful.
This is affordable renewable energy that ticks all the right boxes for me. Plus NO EXIT FEES :-)

Can you contact them (yet again!) and find out who the two suppliers are for the other flat? At which point, either supplier should be able to follow the trail back for that address and (as it's probably a typo), someone will be able to say "oh yes, someone contacted us from number 12 acacia avenue, customer services accidentally just put number 2)"
Industry systems will accept this typo as very occasionally you can have two suppliers at one address.
Really, Scottish Power should be investigating this for you either on their supplier business or the network side as they have the resources and knowledge to correct, and as a customer you just don't have access to the systems.
Could you also get in touch with estate agent to see where previous tenant or LL was getting bills from? This may help your position when you get in contact again.

Turns out I'm actually with utilita (who I've never heard of till now) for both. Chap came today to replace old gas meter as previous tenant had arrears and they want it switched to the smart meter. Which also allows them to reset the arrears apparently.

This company is only prepay apparently but for people in my situation they operate a monthly pay up front thing (complicated). But have to be with them 14 days before you can do that so they have an idea of your usage.

I also asked them the tariff name and prices which at some point I'll try to compare to other companies.

And yes a stiff drink would be good
