What do you think to this quote for kitchen refit?

Only managed to get one quote back from the fitters/builders who've been out to have a look at the job.

Kitchen is approx 3x5m and is a complete redesign so lots of moving pipes/electrics.

Will include:

Stripping out existing kitchen and removal of waste
Repositioning boiler
New electrics
New pipework for sink, dishwasher, washing machine
Supply and fit new radiator
Plaster walls and ceiling
Fit new French windows
Fit new kitchen
Install all other appliances
Tiling.

Price is £3440

I'll be buying the kitchen from diykitchens and supplying the French windows/appliances. Will be getting someone else to do the flooring.

What does this sound like to you experienced lot?

That sounds exceptionally cheap! Usually fitting just the kitchen is upwards of £3k. I appreciate it depends on area but it just sounds too cheap to me.

have you seen their work? are they reputable? sounds incredibly cheap, so cheap I would be wary. dont pay anything upfront and check quals eg gassafe

That would have been cheap 8 years ago which is when I had a new kitchen fitted and had half that amount of work done.

I'd be very, very suspicious!

It's a youngish guy (late 20's) who's building up his own business.

I've got him to quote for another job in the house so might get him to do that first and see how he gets on.

He was well known to the Howdens guy who came round to do a design.

What do you do when you struggle to get people to provide a quote?

Yes very cheap ...we were quoted £3800 to fit (only) our kitchen over 5days !

If he's not yet VAT registered because he's only building the company up then that saves you 20% automatically.

It depends where in the country you are too; if it's London or SE it is cheap, elsewhere probably less so.

Is he planning on doing all the plumbing/electrics on his own, or does that include getting registered tradespeople in to do that? We've been quoted around 2.5k for the electrics alone in our planned kitchen fit 😢

Plumbing will be outsourced but cost is covered in the quote.

He might quote low but add on 'extras' to the final bill.

Has he shown you a full costing item by item? I would say there was a 1 missing from in front of your quote. Seems unfeasibly cheap.

If something is too cheap/too good to be true, there's a reason.

How many days does he think it will take ? Do you know what your local day rate is ?

I would say it is unrealistically cheap. We had good friends doing ours at genuine mates rates (prof kitchen fitter, plasterer and electrician) it cost more than that

If you didn't have "reposition boiler" in there it would still be cheap, and the boiler's no small job!

I would get him to break it down for you with costs against the items you've listed. Then you can google "average cost of x/y/z" and see what doesn't look right.

Good idea to get his quote costed per line.

I'd previously got costings from subcontractors when I was going to do it myself and they came in as follows:

Reposition boiler and new plumbing for sink/dishwasher/washing machine /radiator = £1900 (Inc vat)

Plastering = £290 (Inc vat)

Electrics = £620 (Inc vat)

So that would probably leave him with a day rate of approx £150.

Diy kitchens come ready made so that would cut down the fitting time/costs.

Whole job would take approx 3 weeks (including drying time for plastering)
