Painting Ikea Kitchen Doors

Please Please HELP - Going round in circles about kitchen and now delaying things!

Having looked at various kitchens -we have decided on an Ikea Kitchen as I think the cabinets and whats inside them is the best I have seen and based on cost this fits our budget - BUT - I really dont like any of the doors. Has anyone had Ikea kitchen doors professionally spray painted and if so which ones and how did they turn out / last after painting.

The doors I am looking at are : Bodbyn, Laxarby and Torhamn

I have had b&q laminate ones painted, which I did myself, you can't tell at all. I'd presume a professionals job would be far better than mine, so I'd say go for it!

A client I designed for painted the laxarby one - looked amazing in the after pic they sent me !

I had fronts made for my Ikea kitchen by a carpenter. I think you'll get a much better finish than spraying.

So strange, I was just googling this exact same thing.... Ikea kitchens really are fab.

If the budget stretches I'd get separate doors made in the colour and finish you actually want.

If not, I'm sure a professional would do a good job.

Ikea finish can be painted and painted well but needs to be appropriately prepared and primed. Before you fit the doors sand them; how much you sand will depend on what kind of door they are. If they're chipboard with that plastic/laminate covering then make sure you don't sand through the laminate. Chipboard finish is horrible as I discovered . If they're solid wood or pine then a light sand with a finer grade (say 180) will be sufficient to key the surface.

Then get an appropriate primer/undercoat that allows the paint to grip the surface properly. I used BIN undercoat/primer to do my ikea painting.

Finally get an air gun to produce the best painted finish. If this isn't an option, you can paint them with rollers but make sure you have a dry foam roller to go over the wet paint lightly to give a nice smooth and even finish.

You should be able to do it all in a sort of production line (so get one sanded, then primed, and while that dries get on to the next one, etc.). If you have appropriate work space and everything ready it shouldn't take more than a day to do the whole kitchen (especially as weather is improving so will drying times for the paint).
