Lodgers and WiFi? separate modem?

We're thinking of getting a lodger, we have a great set up for one as their living space and bathroom etc would be almost completely separate from our family living space, they wouldn't be walking through any of "our" area if that makes sense?

Anyway, obviously I'ld do all the usual checks, but worry about sharing an IP address with a stranger (yes they'll technically be sharing our house, but due to lay out we'll actually have nothing to do with them for the most part. I know people get flamed for not wanting to share their Ip address with people who they let into their home, but I don't feel comfortable to "trust" a strangers internet usage even if I trust them to pay the rent and stay in their own section of the building

Is it fairly easily done? separate IP addresses?

Would you not just say WiFi not included and they can buy their own Internet dongle or something like that? That's what I'd expect to do if I was lodging.
Just like I wouldn't expect access to the landlines

Are you worried about them getting up to something dodgy online? It can all be traced to the machine used anyway, can't it?

tissuesosoft · 07/05/2017 15:31

I wouldn't include wifi- mainly because I wouldn't want to set up a contract in my name for someone else to use.

If you don't include wifi you will limit your potential pool of lodgers.

I see wifi as basically a utility and would be very surprised to not find it included in a lodger situation.

Check out adverts for lodgers online to get an idea of what is normal to provide.

I agree that wifi is a basic service and I wouldn't personally want to be a lodger somewhere without WIFI as if I'm keeping to "my area" I'ld be wanting to stream TV etc.

I think I do have to provide wifi, I'm just wondering if its possible to have a separate internet provision for that part of the house IYKWIM rather than giving them the password to our family's modem?

There's a few options on here so they wouldn't need the family wifi password-
www.three.co.uk/Store/Mobile_Broadband?id=1525&aidset=1
I would make it part of their contract that if they lose or damage the dongle the cost of a replacement will come out of their deposit.
