I'm desperately looking for a reliable and professional electrician in North East London (Stamford Hill, Stoke Newington area).

Any suggestions? I've contacted loads but no-one gets back to me! Please help!

Personal recommendation

Look for one who (1) is not just a Domestic Installer, because this is the lowest qualification; and (2) has been in business for some years (you don't want a beginner). You can look up the company on www.gov.uk/get-information-about-a-company

Don't use anyone with a 0845 or 0800 phone no, it will be an agency, and don't use someone you found on an interweb search.

The are "recommendation" websites where the trader pays an advertising fee to get listed, and gets to screen out unfavourable reviews. Goggle "recommendationwebsitename complaints" and you might be surprised. They also employ solicitors to monitor websites and demand that unfavourable posts are removed. Including this one.

A good method of getting personal recommendations is to drive around your area looking for tradesmen's vans, write down the phone no on the side or ask for a card; write down the address they are working at and call round later to ask the householder's opinion. Householders like giving opinions.

p.s.

some tradesmen are reluctant to work for private landlords, after meeting some who want cheap bodge jobs, and some who are reluctant to pay.
