Traffic noise reducing windows - are they worth buying?

Hi everyone

I live next to a moderately busy B road. The double glazed windows on our house allow more traffic noise through than we would like. We are planning to upgrade the bedroom windows to double glazed windows with an acoustic laminate which we have been told are better at reducing traffic noise than triple glazed windows.

Has anyone installed doubled glazed laminated windows for traffic noise reduction purposes? What was your experience - would you say that they are notably better at reducing traffic noise than the windows that you replaced?

Any experiences shared would be greatly appreciated!

We have triple glazed windows for our patio (not for noise, for insulation) and I would highly recommend them. They are not that more expensive than double glazed but the accounstic and insulation difference has been immense.

Had a similar situation at my old house. Busy bus route. Replaced half the windows with laminate (other half were still quite new and installed before we moved in).

Laminate noticeably reduced the road noise. I don't have any experience with triple glazing as a comparison.

One other thing, although obvious, make sure there are no vents in the window frames. Some of the older windows in our house had them, and you could hear that the noise was coming through them even when closed.

Hello!

I live on a busy main road in Battersea and recently had new sash windows fitted with acoustic glass... the noise reduction is amazing! I can't give you any technical data but to give you an idea, before the new Windows we would need to have the tv volume at around '30' to vaguely hear anything and now we have it set at around '12'! We really feel it was worth the investment.

We used a company called www.chapellanesashwindows.co.uk if you are interested. Dealt with a really nice guy called Patrick.

We are also going to have shutters fitted next week so I'll give you an update on any noise reduction these provide - I'm feeling optimistic!

Thanks for these replies - we don't know anyone who has anything other than standard double glazing installed so these responses are really helpful.

chickpeaburger We considered triple glazing but thought it would be best for us to focus on the noise given our proximity to the road. Its good to know that triple glazing has noise benefits as well though.

Derby86 Good point about the vents I have made a note - we won't be getting vents Smile!!

Mellintott It would be interesting to see how much of a difference the shutters make on top of the acoustic laminate.

I am looking forward to buying the acoustic windows - I hope we get the same benefits as you all did!!
