Hemnes Double Bed

I love the look of this Ikea bed and am thinking of getting one. The issue I have is that my current bed is all metal (including slats) and is solid as a rock .

Has anyone had one of these? are they any good in real life?

would I be better off spray painting my current bed?

Hi, I have one of those in the dark brown-black. It is a nice bed, sturdy etc. I just regret buying it because I should have thought about storage really. Like yourself, my previous bed was metal and at least I could stash storage boxes underneath it; I can't do the same with the Hemnes. That would be my only issue with it, but you might not need to use the space under the bed as storage Grin.

That is interesting, I have suitcases under mine at the moment and would hope to keep them there as the loft gets damp and i have no other storage space, I think i need to get a tape measure on the gap between the floor and the base

Soon2bC - yeah good idea about the measuring. I am pretty sure you wouldn't be able to store suitcases under them. I can't fit anything under mine, it is all dead space I'm afraid. Sad

EJC85 · 26/04/2017 16:28

Btw I would measure the gap for you to have an idea but I took my bed apart over a year ago now as we've been sleeping on a floor bed instead.

DerelictWreck · 26/04/2017 16:37

Soon2bc Try an Ikea Malm instead? Similar to Hermes but comes with underbed storage boxes

FlossieFrog · 26/04/2017 16:40

My parents have one in their spare room and we've slept on it. I think the bed is ok, but the mattress they have on it is bloody awful, so make sure you test them out.

BabyClam · 26/04/2017 16:42

We have just replaced an Ikea Malm with the Hemnes and are regretting it. It's much higher but creaky and less stable. The Malm was much more solid.
Both have wooden slats so the comfort will be the same, it all comes down to the mattress quality.

Katie0907 · 26/04/2017 18:29

I'm pretty sure Ikea also do draws to go under the hemnes bed.

MarklahMarklah · 26/04/2017 18:33

We've got the Hemnes day bed (which pulls out into a double). There are three storage drawers underneath. I don't think you could get suitcases in the drawers, but you can get a fair bit of bedding in them.

EJC85 · 26/04/2017 18:55

Gosh Katie0907 and MarklahMarklak I had no idea they had an option with storage drawers! Shock. I wonder if you can purchase them separately and add to an existing Hemnes...Off to have a look now! Many thanks for telling us that Grin

Soon2bC · 27/04/2017 13:48

I am now eyeing up some others that have the Hemnes look on Wayfair and scrutinizing the reviews, and the under bed clearance!

Found a lovely one on Oak Furnitureland but I would rather invest more in a good mattress than on the frame. (however not the £12,000 onw i just saw on John Lewis site!) Shock

EJC85 This one

They do seem to do some under-bed drawers but you'd need to measure to see if they fit or not.

AliceTown · 27/04/2017 17:47

I've had a Hemnes bed for 10 years. It's survived three house moves and countless room reshuffles. Perfectly solid. I've got a double mattress underneath mine. I'd have to lift the frame up to get it out but it's fine stored away like that.

EJC85 · 27/04/2017 21:09

Yeah marklah and katie0907 thank you botj for that! I shall measure mine to be certain but I reckon I need an IKEA trip soon Grin. Thanks for the tips, guys!

I have the kingsize version in white and I love it. Very sturdy and looks beautiful. I have the storage boxes underneath, and I keep shoes and handbags in them. The gap is about 20cm.

Can't comment on the matress though, as we got ours from elsewhere.
