Thinking of relocating 200 miles away

Having to sell up due to personal financial/job issues which doesn't bother me as I see this as a blessing to finally relocate somewhere nicer.(Currently live in a run down town in Midlands which I hate) Me and OH would both love to trial out living together in Cornwall (200 miles away :o ). This will mean an initial period of renting. The plan is to secure a job for OH as he works in leisure industry and I look around for anything I can find while having the money from sale to fall back on. Probably seems a silly move but I see it as a blessing in disguise and don't have any ties. Does this seem unrealistic/daft to any of you truthfully?

The West country has run down towns that can be depressing in spring, autumn and winter. Lack of jobs, low wages.

Much as the West country is beautiful it may not be the ideal you think.

Added to that everything is up country and it's a long way to anywhere

Parts of the south west are really expensive especially tourist areas.

Just move sideways to the west west midlands. Better weather, jobs, facilities, transport, not too crowded.

Having moved from Cornwall to Belgium for Dh's career, I'd do it. I am moving back to Cornwall in 2019, and I cannot wait to get home.

It sounds like an ideal opportunity to move elsewhere, and you dont get many 'easy' chances once children, mortgages etc come along.

Being 200 miles away is no more or less risky or an indication that you'll like it or not. Moving is stressful, making new friends can be hard, finding jobs difficult etc etc. So move wherever you think you'll be happy, distance shouldnt matter.

As to Cornwall, Im not so sure it really lives up to the hype. During the summer its hideously busy and winter its a bit bleak. Houses can also be very expensive. But then again touristy Devon, Dorset or Somerset would be much the same.

If you choose your area wisely it's not bleak in the winter.

I am moving to Cornwall soon (as long as the house sale goes through) and I would have liked to have rented for a year ideally.

There was a very recent thread about moving to Cornwall that you might find interesting.

I am moving because of similar reasons to you. It's a fresh start after tough financial times, and we are setting up our own business.

If you rent to start with you'll get a good feel for the area. I love to West Country but we're in Somerset so we can still get our city fix by going to Bath or even London.

we relocated a couple of hundred miles, it's been fine.

However, I know of 2 couples who relocated to Cornwall (both where one partner had a job to go to). Both returned within two years, finding it not so idyllic as it seemed on holiday.

If I were to relocate, I'd want to make sure that I was within an easy commute (whatever that means to you) of a big city - so much easier to find another job if needed.

I grew up in Cornwall, stayed in the West Midlands for several years after studying there, and then made the decision to move back to my home town in Cornwall after a relationship break down. Job prospects were a lot less but I felt so much happier in a small town with beautiful green fields and rivers. Yes, it's bleak in the winter, but I don't feel that it was any less bleak than the city life in the rain and snow!

You need to choose wisely where to live, though. I've some colleagues that live right out in the sticks and they struggle with being able to socialise/pop to the shops etc. Where I am is a 20 minute drive to a major city so I have the best of both worlds! It's not a touristy town either so it doesn't get really busy in the summer.

House prices are expensive though as a PP has said. renting to trial it is a good idea I would just be wary if you are having financial issues, it's not cheap down here!

I grew up in Cornwall currently live in west Midlands near market drayton theres no work here my other half has had no work for months its a nightmare we have a 3 month old and rent privately we are relocating back to my hometown within the next 3 months i wouldn't suggest anyone lives in the midlands op go to cornwall
