If subway tiles are dated what to get instead?

Just that really...just done one bathroom in black and white subway tiles in an Art Deco type design and I am very happy with it. Starting on another bathroom but don't want to date my entire house so wondering what else to pick that is ahead of rather than behind any trend. (And yes I appreciate you could say I'm almost a century behind re Art Deco!)

Just normal tiles? I'm a fan of simple, big white tiles with a slight texture to them.

Choose what you want for your next bathroom.

Not everyone will like it but I'd rather live with what I liked for a few years than choose with one eye on the resale value.

They must be the most mentioned thing on the current looks that will date badly thread!

The trouble is that anything else seems even more faddish - hexagons, herringbone, fake Moroccan etc.

I need to choose with an eye to resale as have reasonable possibility of a brexit related move.

What about large stone-effect tiles? Stocked in B&Q usually in cream, tan and a darker brown. I did a bathroom in a renovation project in the tan ones with a sandy coloured grout and everyone who viewed loved them. I always thing they look spa-like and they don't date IMO...I realise tastes differ though!

Larger off white tiles. Oblong laid horizontally on top of the other. They should not be stone effect but can be plain or subtly striated.

I plan to stick to plain white large wall tiles when we redo our bathrooms next year, with some kind of dark slatey tile on the floor. Boring but quite classic. I would love encaustic tiles or ogee tiles but I'm worried they will date quickly, or put people off if we sell.

Oh and I'm staying well away from travertine or travertine lookalikes, that's another trend that I think is on its way out.

If we had a Victorian house I might do plain subway tiles as part of a period bathroom, but we have a modern house so I think that makes them less classic.

What age is your house? I think subway tiles look right in an older house anyway and won't date. I think hexagonal/ patterns etc will.

I was thinking the would date too quickly when we renovated our house 10 years ago, and they're still going strong.

I prefer the tiles that look like travertine. Because they don't need cleaning so often and hide soap smudges.

Metro tiles are a classic a bit like white shaker kitchens never go out of style. I'm updating my Victorian cottage and it's going to be white Metro tiles and black/white checkered flooring.

Nooooooooooo! Don't do that! The white tiles show every stray hair or anything that falls on the floor, it will NEVER look clean.

I reckon you can't go too wrong with a large format offwhite/greyish marble style porcelain tile in a mid-range bathroom. Some texture, some color variance, overall light and clean looking. Dark grout to keep it looking better for longer.

Kikoro we were also thinking of the brownish red/black checkered tiles may have to reconsider. Thanks.

@ZaraW to test this... put down some sheets of plain white paper and see how much 'stuff' you can see on the floor after a day :-)

Kikoro :) you've convinced me cleaning floors isn't a priority in our house.

My house is Edwardian so maybe I can get away with them!
