Help me design a granny flat extension!

Just that really!

We've made the decision to build an extension on to my house for my elderly DM to move into. We'll be starting from scratch, so looking for any ideas/advice on what to include or allow for.

All we've decided so far is that it's going to be ground level, one bedroom, completely self contained...but with a link to the main house.

I was thinking we should make it all wheelchair accessible in case DM ends up needing that? Would that be difficult?

What would be the best layout?

Employing a professional is probably the best way to go. There are a lot of building regs. Making a new build accessible for the elderly.

Do you have a floor plan of your house and garden area?

Are you confined in any way by space?
Basically you want bedroom, kitchen or kitchenette, living and dining area or room, bathroom. Wide doors and sufficient turning space in case of wheelchair need or if the inhabitant needs two sticks or crutches or a walking frame. Space in front of the bath in case you want to make it a walk-in one.

Space so someone could stand level with the front door with their walking aids or in a wheelchair - will level access be easy or need complex ramps?

Will MIL want a separate room as a study or anything? Private patio or garden? How much storage?

Besides that, as much sunlight as possible. My ILs live in their conservatory and on the patio.

Phone some architects and chat to them - my granny flat was rebuilt inside how an architect suggested, and it's made a huge difference.
