Do light switches fail?

The main light is no longer working, very rarely use it as we tend to have lamps on instead.
Bulbs are all ok. It is a dimmer switch. Is it likely that this has failed? Or is it something more serious?
All other lights, sockets etc in the same room are working.

Yes, I came on this thread to say "I bet it's a dimmer switch". We've had a couple fail, electrician fixed it in minutes.

Yes I've got one which won't switch on at least 50% of the time. Waiting for someone to replace it.
