Hot water in toilet?!

Not something I routinely do, but while I was cleaning the loo today, I checked the water (clean!!) and it's hot! What on earth does that mean??

Heya, we had this in our flat when we moved in. It means that it's plumbed into the wrong plumbing! It should be easy to fix, but get a plumber round to do it.

Must have been like that - the plumbing can't have randomly changed to another pipe by itself lol Unless you recently had some stuff done elsewhere in the property and the plumber messed up the pipes then.

do you have a hot water cylinder, and a cold tank in the loft? If so, please urgently investigate the cold tank and report back.

As piglet says. Cautiously check your cylinder in your attic if you have one. Urgently. Either your toilet is plumbed in wrong or worse.

Thank you- no, nothing in the loft. We have a storage hot water cylinder downstairs by the boiler. The "warm" loo is upstairs. I've just put my hand in our downstairs loo and it's normal temperature.

Doh, sorry! Funnily enough I thought the downstairs loo was warm last year, had a plumber out, he couldn't find anything wrong (I also thought we had a leak but decided it was small boy wee in the end )

But today is the upstairs loo. I'm sure I would have noticed before, you could kind of feel the heat off it when you flush, if you see what I mean? That's why I put my hand in

My cold tap often runs pretty warm too. I think it's because the two pipes run close to each other. You could test for this I suppose by flushing about 4/5 times. Is it now cold or warm enough to bat, maybe, a small monkey 🐵

if your cylinder is white, with no cold tank, then probably you have a faulty mixer tap or shower, letting water leak between the hot and cold pipes (if this fault occurs and the cylinder is not white, please post some photos of it).

Most likely a ceramic mixer tap with a joystick.

You may be able to identify it if you feel the pipes going into the mixer tap. Sometimes the cold pipe will be surprisingly warm, and sometimes the hot tap will be surprisingly cold.

Thank you pigletjohn yes the cylinder is white. We had a faulty mixer on the bath (same upstairs bathroom as warm loo) several months ago and had to have the cartridge thing changed as the thermostat was all over the place on the bath.

Could it be related?

Or do you mean a faulty mixer thing near the tank? Sorry not very good at this!

it might be the bath mixer. Some are better than others. The joystick kind seem particularly poor.

It's possible to have non-return valves fitted to the pipes going to the taps, they will reduce the flow a bit.
