Dormer loft conversions - do you have "slate" or tile cladding and is it noisy?!

I'm just finalising the drawings for our loft conversion and the loft conversion company that we are using have said that they don't recommend a slate-style finish because the slates are noisy during heavy rain and wind. I've never heard that before and just wondered if anyone had any experience of it. We had our hearts set on slate...

Interesting. No idea I'm afraid, about to complete on our house sale and purchase Friday and we need to dormer it so it's interesting to hear. I wnated slate but I guess tile is Cheaper. Saying that the sound of rain is quite nice? Maybe.

We've for slate and I don't find it very noisy. The noise of the rain on the Velux windows is the only noise and it is quite soothing

We have crows that stomp around on the roof, and I hear them
They also sit on the skylight above the stairs and peer at me, which is a bit creepy!

We have tile, dorma built by previous owner. It's noises. We have magpies tap dancing on the roof very early in the summer. From sunrise 5am ish. Can also hear planes going over and we are about 10 miles from the airport.

I was told by each loft company that came to quote that it was a cost neutral change to go from tile finish to slate finish but none of them mentioned this and in the context of a few other issues raised by the company we've gone with I'm finding myself questioning it.

Our house has a loft conversion (about 20 years old) roof is slate and you don't hear any extra noise in the bedrooms

We have tiles. The only noise we hear is noisy birds stomping on the roof. I wouldn't say it's noisy at all

Top tip for the skylight above the stairs... get really really good double glazing, with a big gap between the panes of glass if you are putting a bathroom in the loft

We get terrible condensation on our skylight, despite having a good extractor fan in the bathroom and mostly closing the bathroom door when we shower. It collects on the glass then drips onto the stairs carpet and has also discoloured the paint where the glass meets the wall

We have only got a single glazed pane, and it would be a huge (and expensive) scaffolding job to replace it with a double glazed one

Thanks for that spare. I was thinking how lovely yours looks apart from the crows and wouldn't have thought about condensation at all. We are having a bathroom up there but were planning a Velux so we can open it and clean the outside.
