Glass for Splashbacks

I can't afford a new kitchen so need to tart up what I have. I want to get a glass splashback for behind my cooker (no discussion on whether it is "in" or not please ).

I know I can get regular glass from a glaziers, but what exactly am I asking for?

I guess tempered glass (so it can deal with the heat). What depth - 6mm? Do we specify the edges being smoothed (does that have a name?) We are happy to paint ourselves.

Or, can anyone recommend a cheap place to get one?

I hate cleaning tiles after my DH has cooked! Following

I phoned up my local glass place, told them what I wanted (glass splashback behind hob) and they made it for me. Mine is plain clear glass, it's tempered, edges are smooth, and they drilled a hole in each corner. Was appx £50 for 80x100 cm. Google 'glass splash backs' for your local town and you should get some matches.

Have a look at Premier Range -they do plain white ones (other colours, too) very cheaply and ready to fit. Toughened glass.

If it's tempered glass, it cannot be cut or drilled by the glazier, it must be done at the glass factory before tempering.

But a glazier will know how to order it for you. The measurements must be very exact, and triple-checked, as it can't be altered once made.

Even clear glass will have a slight tint, and the colour of the wall will look a bit different through it.

I like a splashback that is the same width as the hood (so wider than the hob) and reaches right up to the hood. It will be rather heavy. Ask if they can deliver.

Thanks Piglet. It will have to go over tiles - will adhesive hold it?

I doubt it. Remember it will be very heavy, and both the glass and the tiles very smooth and shiny. Why can't you drill the wall? You could use mirror clips if the splashback has no holes.

I just assumed drilling through tiles would be a nightmare (non diy-type person here )
