Electrics or Plumbing?!

We moved into an old house in September. We knew it needed lots of modernising but we have had a few hiccups and are faced with needing the plumbing and electrics doing. Which one is better to do first? We are struggling to raise funds to do both at the same time.

Electrics first otherwise them dirty pipe flinging monkeys just put pipes in the way

Electrics first.

If you have a plumbing disaster, you'd get flooding and possibly have to do without water while it's fixed.

If you have an electrical disaster, you could possibly get electrocution and/or a fire.

And if you get flooding onto dodgy electrics, you're pretty much stuffed.

But if you get flooding onto modern electrics with a good circuit breaker, then once it's dried out and tested as safe, you can at least boil some bottled water in a kettle to make some tea.

It depends how bad each is and what work needs doing to them.

We've recently had both done.

Get the electrics done first so that if you're installing a new electric shower/boiler/kitchen light fitting/plug sockets or whatever, then the electrics are up to date before the plumbing can begin in other rooms.

Having your electrics done is a pain in the bum and it's a mess if it needs rewired (ceilings re done, etc) but well worth it to have it done first.

Get your plumbing done after the electrics are finished before you put any flooring or carpets down.

They kind of go hand in hand. The plumbing needs to be earthed properly and the electrics need to be waterproof, and both involve pulling up floors etc.
