Help - Can we Move electric meter out of garage?

We're considering turning our garage into a downstairs bedroom. We have 2 garages. This one is already "inside" - it already has a bedroom above it IYKWIM, so a fairly straightforward job of replacing the garage door with a windows.

Only problem is that the electric meter and trip switch etc are all in this room. I really do not like the idea if having the meter in the bedroom. Is there anything we can do about it without it costing a fortune?

What I'd really like to do is to "push it through the wall" so that it sits on the other side in the hallway - is this possible?

I had my gas meter moved. Going back about 15 years now though I can't remember how much it cost. I just v allies the gas board. I'm sure your electric supplier will be able to help

Yes but it will cost you.

When you find out the cost, you may grow to like the idea! It's not a problem having it in a bedroom - just have it boxed in.

Does anyone currently have one in a bedroom? Does it cause any issues?

It can be moved, but it will cost you a lot.
If I was you, I'd just box it off.
Is the meter high up or low down?

It's high up. Right next to the garage door.

If you can find a wardrobe high, cut a section of the back out and just push it up to the wall. If not, a nice wall cabinet.

Box it in. Moving meters has to be done by a specialist with permission from the utility networks, and can cost upwards of a grand.

For more than 20 years I lived in a flat where the main electric trip box switches, etc were located in the main bedroom about a foot or so under the ceiling. It never bothered me a bit - no noise, no issues, nothing. I built some shelves directly underneath the electrical installation and when filled with books etc one can hardly notice the installation on top.

Maybe ask for a smart meter and if they can move it while it's being fitted

They would still charge you to move it.

As others have said, it's expensive! It's also complicated. We're about to get ours moved as we're building an extension and the wall the meter is on is going.

So £600 for the energy distribution company to turn up and move the meter. BUT we have to excavate a channel for the new cables, buy and somehow sink the new meter box into an external wall, and arrange an electrician and representative from the power supplier to be on site on the same day to connect the new meter to the consumer unit. It's a nightmare.
