Cistern continuously refilling...

Can anyone help please? This loo is about 4 years old. Flush not working and water constantly refilling....

P.s. sorry it's manky. Have never had cause to open it before

Sorry no help but mine is flushing but constantly emptying and refilling,can't work out why for love nor money.hoping some clever person comes along and your fix work for mine too

you need to lift and secure the float arm to close the inlet valve where the water is coming in.

i think it might be the lollipop bit on the right hand side. ....have a fankle lifting and pushing things to see what happens. do not break anything

I know you say the flush is broken, but the toilet at work continues flushing sometimes if someone holds the button down too long....an extra short push will bring it to its senses and stop the water running, maybe try that

Is it the type with the button in the top of the lid? A water saving type? Try firmly pushing the underside of the button thing back into the central mechanism.

Try wiggling the white wire thing that links to the flush button. Hopefully it will pop out.

The button is not on the top it's on the front but yes it's a push button. Upper and lower buttons. Pushing underside worked but only for 2 seconds then restarts. Tondelaya what do you mean by lift and secure and also what do you mean by lollipop.

Yes,the float arm/ ballcock thing needs to be lifted and secured .

Did this start when someone took the cistern lid off?

You can't just lift them off. If you try, this happens

No no one lifted the cistern lid but it just rests on top on dowels like ikea furniture so i can't see what difference that would make...

the lolly shaped bit...there's a blue thing on the right, looks lke it is holding stuff together

the stick coming out from there with the round bit on....that looks like a lolly...does that move up and down?

Something in there will be moving to open and close the water valve....essentially like a tap but it goes up and down instead of turning like a tap

ALSO ...the thin clear tube should be fixed (maybe just a push fit) to the back of the flush button....if this is not joined to the flush then that's maybe why the flush is not working at all.

lift and secure.....if raising the arm (of the lollipop) stops the water running in, then you may need to tie it up...a hair bobble/wire twist but do not try to flush it again it you fix it or it may break....it's a temporary, stop it running like crazy fix only.

Thank you thank you. Did some jiggling and adjusted arm. It stopped. Tried flushing but still no good and set flow off again. Got it paused again. Phew. Off to toolstation to buy spare parts (bit linked to flush and the lollypop bit). Can anyone point flush direction of a youtube diy video that shows how to fit? Underneath we have soil stack and also one pipe clad in mesh cable. One end enters into bottom of cistern and other end goes 'outside' the unit housing the cistern. Photo attached.

the mesh one is probably water IN to the cistern, has that got a screw on it anywhere....you might be able to turn the water off from there, but obv the toilet will be out of action as it won't refill at all then...maybe on the joint bit after the copper pipe??

white one...maybe the overflow? Any pipes dripping outside? If the cistern has been refilling then the water has to go somewhere.

Many thanks. Have decided best not to tinker today as going away for two nights tomorrow morning so will be up crap creek if i break or flood sthing. Will check back of house for leaks. Will pick up the parts and try when am back. Main thing is that cistern has shut up. Luckily have second loo can use today. Thanks to all - will be back with toilet woes next week. Have good new years :)

You will need to either, replace a wash within the cistern or replace the flushing system inside.

If it was just continually filling, I'd say washer. If it's no longer flushing as well, you might also need to replace the flush system in the middle. Normally costs between £17 to £25, depending where you go.

Fairly easy to do but, you will need to get all the water out of the cistern.

We got both parts (big flush bit and lever arm bit) for about 20 from toolstation. Will investigate when back! (P.s. no obvious leaky pipes at back of house)

Cisterns like the one you have don't have external overflows. Excess water will just go down your toilet.

Looking at the limescale and gunk, it might simply be a case of:
Turn off the water supply, there's probably a silver service valve with a slot for a screwdriver. The slot will be the same direction as along the pipe for on, across the pipe for off.......or turn off the house supply.
Flush to check the water really is off!
Undo the blue knurled nut, on the right
Clean the limescale/gunk off the washer/diapragm inside the bit you've just taken apart
Reattach the blue nut thing
Turn the water supply back on.

Done!

The filling valve on the right is a bottom-entry Torbeck.

On youtube or videojug you will find a vid of how to clean it out. They are very prone to grit in the water. But they are the quietest valve I have ever seen.

Observe the white hole for the pin when you reassemble it.

Wickes had a few on clearance offer recently.
