Moving to Hertford

I'm considering a move to Hertford. Anyone know what areas are more sought after? And how is the town? Is there lots for kids to do? I have a 5 and a nearly 3 year old and we're in Bishops Stortford which I'm not keen on tbh. I guess I'm after a place with a little bit more buzz, London would be the obvious option but we have to stay close-ish to school.

Budget?
What do you do now with your kids?

Budget of up to 650k, 3 beds, off street parking. Just the usual child centred activities, craft cafe, national trust, country walks, I want to be able to walk to a pub/restaurant. So not somewhere completely rural. Need to be fairly close to the A10 to get us back into Stortford every day.

I'm surprised you're not fond of BS. We live in a market town outside stansted (I'm sure you can probably guess where). There seems to be a lot going on in bishops stortford. There's a variety of groups and clubs. My kids are a similar age.

It is getting better, slooowwwly. I think my issue with it is it was almost an enforced move so I'll never love it. There's a lack of good local things to do, we seem to drive an hour in all directions to entertain the kids most days. And people tend to live in the villages as opposed to BS itself which has a real shortage of housing. Where you are is lovely btw but it's off limits for various reasons.

So are you going to drive back to BS each day to take your DC to school?
Hertford is OK with the usual clubs and activities for DC plus some good restaurants and bars for the evening but it's not London or anything like it. Can't see the appeal with a switch from BS.

How long have you been in BS? From what I've seen there's a fair amount going on but it won't ever compare to London and I'm not sure Hertford would either. We've found from where we are in sw that for anything like country parks and such there's always going to be a big drive. That there's not a lot around but I'm not sure you'd get that anywhere round this way. We've toyed with the idea of a move to Hampshire for this reason as we feel cut off from the outdoor stuff we like. Also, with a child in school you might find they'll want play dates and if you're quite far away that won't be possible. Have you made friends?

I had a quick recce this afternoon and the more I think about it- it just wouldn't work. YY on the play dates, driving to school etc. Truth be told I'm getting divorced, I need to stay here for school, shared care etc. but I'd rather be anywhere than here. Gah... I think Stortford it is for the forseeable future.
