Want a vanity unit in my bathroom which I can paint

Why is this so hard?!

The bath is being sprayed a Farrow and Ball colour, and the walls are being tiled to half-height and then painted a complementary colour above the tiling.

The opposite wall will be white and will have the sink on it, and I was hoping to get a vanity unit underneath it which we could paint the same colour as the opposite wall.

But there doesn't seem to be such a thing as a plain-wood vanity unit!

Am I being dense?

I've just seen my thread title, which makes me sound about 2 years old. I am on the verge of throwing my sippy cup on the floor

A vanity unit is only a cabinet. you could use an 800mm kitchen wall or floor unit if you wanted, and add legs

Look for a local chippy who can make one.

WBP ply would do, if painted and edges sealed it is fairly water-resistant.

You could paint any of these, but avoid vinyl wrap MDF which is rubbish.

If searching, they are sometimes still called vanitory units, or washstands.

Would my builders have to drill all sorts of holes for waste pipes and things?

They'd be perfectly capable, but just checking what I'm signing them up for...

IKEA have a good range of wood vanity units and bathroom sink cabinets.

with most cabinets, the back wall is hardboard or thin mdf intended to be cut through for pipes and cables. Plumbers do it all the time.

the top could normally be cut to fit the basin of your choice, probably using a jigsaw.

Sometimes, vanity units are sold with no top, for a full-sized basin top to be fitted, as in some of the complete units in my earlier link.

So you will have to treat yourself to a pre-Christmas trip to an IKEA showroom?!

(A couple of years back I searched for ages for a vanity unit that went to the floor for a flat that had hard concrete walls so pipes could not be hidden. IKEA seemed to be about the only place. I then did the opposite of getting the builder to paint the bath panel in the same colour. The one problem was that the white sink enamel was quite a different shade from the white bath, but now in, it seems fine.)

You can paint mdf quite easily, you just need to prepare it.
