does anyone else have a fridge freezer in their garage? does it work ok?

We've bought a spare fridge freezer with expanding family to put in garage I couldn't face another Christmas cooking for parents with food squashed in our single fridge! Instructions say shouldn't be placed in a room under 10 degrees we've just checked and our garage is currently 5 degrees. I know my mum has one in her garage and its lasted her a good 10 years just wondered if anyone else has done this and whether it's been ok ? We are also thinking of a tumble dryer in there too. Thanks in advance for advice

Have heard of people having problems with freezers in garages. I don't think a tumble-dryer would be a problem, but wouldn't have it running if I was out.

I bought a fridge freezer that i put in my garage then realised that the freezer bit switched off when the temp in the garage fell too low. I eventually sold it and bought a really cheap fridge and separate freezer that just stays frozen all the time. It was an expensive error.

There are certain brands of fridge/freezer that are OK in garages. Might be beko but not sure

I have both a condenser dryer and a chest freezer in my garage. I asked in Curry's or wherever it was for one that would be ok out there and I've got a Hotpoint one, never had an issue it's great

Had one years ago, just a normal upright fridge freezer, and it conked out on Christmas Eve of all times. It's something to do with the ambient temperature being lower than the temperature of the fridge freezer. Saying that, my in laws have had a chest freezer in their garage for years and never had any problems. Do they all say 10 degrees?

I have a chest freezer in the cellar and yes it's a good idea.i keep excess frozen food in there, I also have a booze fridge in a cupboard in the living room which is a standard under the counter size one, and at Xmas or whatever I also use it for food and not just booze.

Both work as sometimes it can be a struggle to fit everything uou need in one fridge freezer. I'd say go for it.

It's not usually a problem with chest freezers, it's because fridge freezers often only have one thermostat and it lives in the fridge, so if the outside temp drops too low the thermostat just switches off, which is fine for fridge stuff but obviously not freezer stuff.

Beko do some that are ok down to -15 degrees

I have an American style Beko fridge/freezer in the garage (had it before we moved here and kitchen we inherited has a built in fridge/freezer). 5 months in and no problems so far. In fact I think the freezer works better than the integrated one as food doesn't seem to get icy.
Also have a tumblr dryer next to it. As pp mentioned I wouldn't leave tumble dryer running while I'm out but I'd be the same with washing machine/dishwasher. I have noticed that the tumble dryer is really loud- think the noise reverberates more in the echo-y garage. If you were in a semi-detached with a neighbour that side the noise might be bothersome?

Don't do fridge freezer in the garage, it'll conk out when the temperature drops and ruin your food. Ours cut out a week or so before Christmas and ruined my food prepped and frozen. Chest freezers are okay I think!

Yes. We recently got one BUT (and I didn't know until we started looking online for them) that only some are suitable for outbuildings. We got ours from Currys for the only reason that they stayed which ones did in the details and a lot of places didn't.

Eek, i am worried now. Just put my upright freezer in the garage, will it be ok? Or is there anything i can do to help it? It is a newish samsung one.

Hmmm think we may have made a mistake after these replies. Id thought as my mums fridge freezer seems to cope maybe it would be fine. I guess we will have to see. We are hoping to extend the kitchen at some point so the plan would be to then move this one in the house and the old small fridge and separate freezer to the garage. The tumble dryer should be ok noise wise I would have thought- its a detached garage from our house just attached to another garage, and nearest neighbour is across the street. We have a fridge freezer in our garage. it is a Currys own-brand which we bought 20 years ago for inside use. When we moved house 10 years ago there was a built-in fridge freezer in the kitchen, so our one got relegated to the garage. It's been fine out there, and I wouldn't be without it. The garage has certainly been below feeezing most winters.

Beko are fine to -15 degrees so are the brand recommended for garages. Looking at these myself and Which and JL have excellent reviews for tall one @ £329 price match. Very tempted!

When I was looking for a freezer for the garage a year ago, beko was the only brand that claimed they could cope with low ambient temperatures. It was quite easy to look up the details online.

Mines in the garage and its fine - its a Samsung one, I think it auto adjusts itself when it gets very cold.

Lol. I've had our (second hand) freezer in the garage for about 7 years and never realised it turned itself off! Oh well,nobody has been poisoned so far, and there's no space for it indoors!!

Depends on the fridge freezer, if it's advertised to work at minus C temperatures. Most Beko ones are.

We bought a beko one that states is fine to go in outbuildings. It's been in a gather for well over five years. Works brilliantly

Growing up I had a fridge, a freezer, washing machine and tumble dryer in the garage. No experience with it as an adult though as I live in a flat

Specifically bought the Beko larder freezer because it was going in the garage and it states that it copes with very low temps.

I batch cook and shop at Costco so freeze a lot of stuff and needed extra space than the kitchen freezer could give.

Is there any way you could insulate your garage a bit so the temperature doesn't drop as much?

we have a chest freezer in the garage and for the seven years its been there it has never been a problem.
