Building Regs Question

Hello,

We are in the process of finding a builder for a single story extension (kitchen).

When talking with one of the, we discussed the fact that the loft had been converted (by a previous owner). the stairs up to the loft are not enclosed, but there is a self shutting door at the top of the loft. Fire doors weren't put in, but a wired fire alarm system with an alarm on each landing was installed.

I went onto the council web site and the loft did receive Building Regs sign off at the time (in 2000).

So, we aren't sure if we will now need to install further wired alarms in the bedrooms as well, or install fire doors on all doorways etc, or if we are fine as is (keeping wood doors).

Does anyone know the answer, or where I could find it? Google isn't being my friend today.

Thank you!

Phone your local council's building control department for a chat - they'll know the answer.

But I'm pretty sure you won't need to do any further work unless you want to bring them up to the current standards.

We have exactly the same loft/stairs etc as you have described OP and we are in the middle of our single storey extension. We haven't had to make any changes to the existing lift extension that was signed off by building regs 16 years ago. Just a fire door to the new kitchen is needed and more downstairs smoke alarms.

Wonderful, thanks both. Our local council is next to impossible to get a hold of for planning. Will try though, as it's a good idea.

Thanks!
