Which wood? Or laminate snap together type boards? Can I do it myself? It all seems so £££££££.

Any tips would be gratefully received.

You can get engineered flooring which is a layer of wood over plywood (I think). It comes with the click system.
It depends on what wood you like - my favs are oak and acacia even though acacia seems to be difficult to find and planks are shorter.
If you get the click system (tongue and groove) you should be able to do it yourself.
