Painting furniture / removing paint

I'm looking at a few antique pieces of furniture. Unfortunately the woods are different types and colours. Fortunately I like the shabby chic look so thinking of painting them in Annie Sloan. Just worried if they don't turn out nicely will it be difficult to remove the paint? They are all heavily carved items e.g. My dining table top is fully hand carved all over.

You can get paint stripper but I don't know how potentially damaging that would be to antique wood. Maybe worth going to a small decor shop that does Anne Sloan and asking them?
Hand sanding engraved wood would be a major PITA.
