Does anyone recognise this light fitting?

Does anyone recognise this light fitting? It uses tiny little bulbs, which keep on going and need replacing, but we don't know where to get them from. Our first thought was IKEA, but it's not from there.

show us one of the bulbs please, especially the end that screws or plug into the fitting. Put a 50p coin or ruler into the photo to show scale.

that's a 20p piece - I couldn't get my camera to focus better than that.

We have bulbs like that. Yes, they do keep blowing. Drives us mad as we have 20 bulbs between the kitchen and bathroom lights. Our light fittings came from Homebase. I think you can get replacement bulbs from there or from any specialist electrical or lighting shop.

You can now get an equivalent LED which should last longer (not widely available yet). If they blow frequently, and you are not using a dimmer, then there is probably a loose connection at the switch or the ceiling fitting. Do you ever notice flickering?

For size, measure the distance between pin centres, accurately, in mm. Small bulbs tend to have names/reference numbers with the pin spacing embedded in the reference.

you do know that you mustn't touch halogen bulbs with your fingers, as the skin oil or grease damages them?

No, I didn't know about touching them! Also, the fitting is connected to a dimmer switch, is that a problem?

the dimmer may prevent them getting hot enough.

The design is that the quartz glass gets so hot that the metal, burned off from the filament, evaporates off the glass and redeposit on the filament, making it last longer.

You are safest handing the bulbs in a clean cloth or kitchen roll. If accidentally handles, they can be cleaned with meths, but if they are turned on without being cleaned, the glass is damaged, and it's then too late.

I just looked, and Phillips make LED G9 lamps, but they are currently £7 or £8 each.
