Raising garden wall in new house

We're looking at a house and the wall on one side of the garden is about 4 feet tall. If we bought, I'd want to raise it by about 2 feet because I'm antisocial cranky shy and would prefer not to feel obliged to make conversation if the neighbours and I were out at the same time.

If someone moved in next door to you and asked you if they could do this, would you think they were awful people and never want to speak to them again?

I'd be delighted.

Id love it too.

Check the deeds. Is it your wall or is it their wall?

The only objection would be if it cuts out sunlight to their garden. If I had a nice sunny garden and someone built up a wall which shaded my summer picnic, I might not be happy.

As others have said, it could be that they would welcome more privacy. It will depend very much on the circumstances of the garden and the neighbours. IMO

How about putting a trellis on top of the existing wall? You could grow plants along it to give some extra privacy without it feeling that you and/or your neighbours were being bricked in.

I would do trellis and climbing plants as a 6 ft wall looks a bit austere imo.
