I hate my toilet

We have a crap flushing toilet, in that it doesn't flush crap, I mean. I have had to use a bucket of water to create enough pressure to actually work.

Anyone had this problem and solved it. I am prepared to get a new toilet, but suggestions would be useful.

Can't help in solving it I'm afraid, but my mum's upstairs loo is the same and can only be used for 'light' use! It's odd, because the flush seems fine and yet doesn't even flush a couple of pieces of toilet paper much of the time. I think it's the design of the toilet itself, but mum is convinced that it's because the plumber chucked a load of rubbish (grit and stuff from the house build) down there when it was installed. It's never been great.

Sure someone with a clue will be along soon!

If you're considering replacing, then you could have a look at what brands they have in restaurants and pubs etc. At home, I've got toilets from Burlington and Heritage andId say they are pretty good but I've been more impressed by some in McD or somewhere lol

A friend of mine had problems with the toilet in her house not flushing stuff away. A plumber told her it was the style of toilet and the shape of the u-bend. She bought the cheapest toilet in b&q, had it installed and not had a problem since.

We bought a plumber's merchant basic one and an ideal standard at the same time. The ideal standard uses slightly less water but flushes incomparably better - the water "whooshes" more. As Jojo says, find a loo you like and look at the brand.

I have seen our good loo in a couple of shopping centres but I wouldn't recommend it particularly as the cistern has needed fixing a couple of times.

Thanks all. It is such a ridiculous problem. It was installed by the people who previously lived in this house, so reasonably new. And we wouldn't replace it otherwise.

Not ridiculous IMO - you'd replace something else that didn't work properly so why not this?

Silly question - it doesn't have a brick or bag in the cistern to help save water does it? It's a long shot, but if so this could help a little.

Sorry, I mean if you have one, removing it might help.

Our downstairs loo is the same - apparently it's due to the gradient of the waste pipe not being steep enough Drives me mad and how exactly do you tell visitors not to crap in the downstairs loo???! Thankfully we are moving next week so will avoid the next exciting instalment of dynorod when it gets completely blocked up for the umpteenth time

tell me about the cistern. Can you lift the lid off and look inside? If so please post photos.

If it has a button on the lid, start asking round for recommendations of a local plumber. A new cistern is of trivial cost.

How big is the actual cistern OP ? Does it look small compared to their toilets ?
Alot of new toilets are designed to save water therefore the cistern is made smaller which also means it's not as powerful to flush things away as they have less water.

Our downstairs toilet is a Bristan. It flushes well, my friend once commented that if she'd been sitting on it she'd have been sucked down it !
It was from homebase I think. One of their take away ranges that was about £100 for the toilet and sink.

I hate our toilet in our extension. The flush is rubbish and the seat needed replaced after a year. Have spent ages trying to get a seat to fit it. The nearest one we could get to fit still moves when you sit on it. Everyone avoids it. Seriously thinking about getting it replaced after only 3years.
