Help! Mice in our kitchen...

Any wisdom on what to do? We've found mice poo in the kitchen and have located where they're coming in from outside and know that we have to cover up the hole but first we'd like to eradicate them from our home to ensure we don't have a dying mice smell in the kitchen!

We rent and have notified the landlord and he will come and fix where they're coming in from, but what do we do with the mice in the house? I feel so sick and terrified!

Depends if you want to kill them or catch and release.

I do catch and release personally. You can get loads of humane traps on eBay or Amazon and they ship very fast. For mice, bait them with chocolate, they love the stuff.

Catch mouse in trap, drive it at least 2 miles and then release. At worst it will be dinner for some owl.

If you want to kill them, then use snap traps not poison. You throw the whole thing away - trap and corpse. You do need to have somebody available who will humanely despatch any half-caught mice though (the reason why I don't use kill traps - I'm incapable of bashing things over the head).

Make sure any food sources are in boxes, tins, the fridge etc. You can block up entrance points with wire wool.

Our mouse was too smart for the humane traps. Mouse got the bait, Trap did nothing. We got an electric shock trap. Less mess than the snappy ones and effective.

I'd love one, however the landlord doesn't allow pets!

We've caught one and set it free. We also found a massive chewed hole in the wall and in the floor where the kitchen pipes are. Landlords coming to look at it tomorrow to help us devise a plan of what happens next.

If you want to go down the poison route then check your local Council's website as most seem to offer reduced fees.

I used ours and they were really helpful.

Our council doesn't do pest services anymore. Cheapest we could find was 180 for 3 visits. Our landlords admitted there was a previous problem of mice and also stated that it isn't our fault just where the house is situated and the air bricks are where they're getting in.
