Making a larger space for dishwasher

I think I'm probably after the holy grail, but there we go.

We have a small utility area separate to our kitchen, which holds the kitchen sink. There is also the washing machine there, and space (and plumbing) for a narrow dishwasher. However, we have a full size dishwasher and wondering if there's a way to cheaply make space for it.

When we first looked, we thought we could saw off some of the cupboard under the sink, as there is a gap between sink and cupboard. But after measuring, I think it might still be a couple of centimetres too narrow.

So, I've been trying to work out if there is a way around it without having to replace the whole utility area. (I'd love to, but we can't afford it)

Is there a way we could have some sort of freestanding sink? Or maybe moving the sink - but this would then mean the whole worktop would need changing. This would be costly, surely? I'll post some pictures in the next post. I don't mind losing cupboard space, or losing a door and replacing with a curtain (would prefer that anyway!)

I know it would probably be cheaper to just buy a narrow dishwasher, but I don't want one of those, so I'd rather spend the money on making the utility area a bit nicer if I'm going to have to spend it anyway.

Measure between the start of the dip in the sink for the bowl on left side and the wall -if there's more than 600mm there then you could possibly put a 600mm DW in, if you dissembled the cabinet under the sink - but you'd need to make sure the worktop was supported so will still need either a support leg or panel - and you'd need at least 10mm to the left of DW to the wall to make sure the door clears the wall to open ...

There is just over 610mm

when you reconfigure the ute, you can support the worktop on battens fixed to the wall, and a rail under the front, with no cupboard.

However if you try to put a front rail in now, it will probably get in the way of the dishwasher and prevent you pushing it in.

You could try supporting the worktop on adjustable chrome legs, and cutting out the cupboard. Once you can see how much room there is, you may be able to get a new cabinet to fit.

BTW I think I see a water pipe at the back of the space, probably intended for a washing machine. Dishwashers are unusually large, made to take up every scrap of space, and will protrude beyond the worktop if they can't push right back against the wall. They have a small recess at skirting level for pipes and cables.

btw laminated worktop is very cheap.

If you have a circular saw, you will find the damaged ones at half-price at the back of the store.

If you go for a rail, you will have to mount it slightly higher.

most DW are 600, so i reckon you'd be fine.

If you don;t have littles then I'd whip out that cupboard, get the dishwasher in and just have open shelves/baskets under the sink right along to the adjoining wall behind the washer, and just keep rarely used stuff right at the back.
And support the work top with battens along the wall.

What I would really love to do, is rip it all out, put dishwasher and washing machine side by side where sink is, have a deep sink where the washing machine is, and cover the walls with shelves like a larder. And then curtain it off behind the arch. One day!!

Will sit down with DP with this thread and see if he could do some of the suggestions here. Great ideas Piglet!
