Noisy heating. At the end of my tether

Every time our heating fires up, we get a banging noise in our bedroom. It happend for about 5-10 seconds then stops. It only happens when the heating initially comes on and its loud!

We had all of the radiators in the house replaced last winter and our heating engineer checked the pipes in our room for movement and said that they were secure.

Does anyone have any idea as to what the problem could be? I cant have another winter of being work up at stupid oclock when the temperature falls below what the thermostat is set for and the heating fires up

Maybe locked air in the pipes - have you tried bleeding all the radiators?

Yes sounds like your radiators need bleeding

I think it is the pipes expanding, probably under the floor, and being cramped in some way.

To check if it is the pipe supplying this radiator, or some other pipe, turn the radiator fully off at its knob and turn the heating on. If no bang, wait half an hour or so, then turn the knob on.

You can try putting your hand on the pipes just prior to the heating coming on. The flow pipe will heat up a minute or two before the return pipe. You may also be able to detect a jolt as the pipe moves.

If that's the cause, it is mostly likely under the floor where the pipe is pressed against the joist. You may be able to see where the floorboards were cut to run the pipe.

A less likely cause would be the radiator valve, if it is a thermostatic one; and even less likely, the radiator moving on its brackets. For the last 20 years or so radiators have been supplied with U-shaped silencing pads which fit between radiators and the wall brackets, but sometimes people fail to fit them.

Turned our rad off and put heating on & no noise. Turned our rad back on after a short while and the noise started so i'm assuming its piples leading to the rad in our room?

If so im not impressed as our heating engineer told us the pipes were secure and not causing the noise when we had the rads installed.

So it's a case of lifing the floor an lagging the offending pipe?

probably.

It may be necessary to chisel away a bit of joist to give enough room, otherwise maybe move the pipe clips. You can still get felt for pipes which, though not as good as modern insulation, allows pipes to slide without rubbing.

wrapping in carpet felt would also do.

It's possible the pipes were laid in notches in the joists and the floorboards are pressing on them. Clever people paint the route of the pipes on floorboards to discourage nails and drills.
