Magnolia paint in our new build house

After weeks of angst about property prices etc we have just put down a booking deposit on a new build house in a new development, we adore the show house & are so so excited. However the house is at the very top of our budget every cent we have is going into it (however house will be ready in 8 months time so we have time to save!)

The house comes with a builders finish with magnolia paint:( We will not be able to afford to paint & will need to stick with the magnolia as the house comes with nothing included except grey kitchen units.

What colour scheme should I go with magolia? We were thinking originally of a grey sofa but we think magnolia & grey would look awful together... Advice please, the magnolia has to stay

Why would grey look bad with magnolia? Surely the point of magnolia is that is is a bland cream and can work with most things. Grey and cream is a classic combination. We have grey and cream in our study. I have attached a picture. This room is still a work in progress but we basically have a grey sofa bed, cream wall and a cream/grey throw on the sofa. I don't think it looks awful.

Might be worth asking if they will finish in white instead? They will be doing the ceilings white anyway so they will be saved the cutting in. On the other hand much of our house is still magnolia from its new build days and, actually, I quite like it. It's warm and sort of glows in the sunshine

DH (painter on new builds) says if you ask you should get it painted in white if you want. He says go in and ask in the show house that would prefer white - they might charge you a bit but they will do it.

Nothing wrong with magnolia - in north facing rooms it make is feel warm compared to white

We had ours painted in white. We asked the builders and it was only about £100 extra.

Freezing. It is from John Lewis. We chose the sofa bed style then the cover. It is very nice.

You wouldn't be able to repaint for a year regardless of your finances. They use breathable paint so ask for white and they'll use the same as the ceiling

Love the couch too bluesky!! We asked the estate agent when we were paying our deposit if we can change to white but they said no the builders make no changes to the original... I'm just trying to get an idea of what would work colourwise as magnolia is quite a warm peachy colour... Really can't afford to change it unfortunately:(

I would suggest doing things the other way around. Decide what color you plan on painting eventually and choose the furniture that you like. Surely it is cheaper to keep the furniture and get what you like even if it mean a year in wierd combination than change everything again later. White pain is really cheap I got a baril for 75$ a few years ago, enough to paint my whole flat.

I would suggest asking the site manager yourself....

We have cream walls - anything can go with it. Chocolate, wheat, oak, pine - with accents of any bright colour - eg teal, blue, green. Or you can do the opposite - bright or dark furniture with cream accents. What's on the floor?

I did cream walls, wheat covered sofas, light oak furniture and large bright cushions & paintings, mirrors. Wooden blinds and light voile curtains - it's a north facing house and looks really light and airy

I agree with Qwe - pretend they are the colour you want so when you have more money, you only need to repaint walls. I feel your pain though, our house was magnolia and we've only just finished painting most of the rooms. The hall/stairs/landing and utility are still magnolia though, and I hate it. I don't think it's like cream at all - far too yellowy.

That's v odd they won't let you change colour. We had whole house done in dulwx 'timeless' when we moved in - a little dull but more an off white than magnolia. Could they be persuaded to do this type of colour instead? I would push them a bit harder.

Timeless looks amazing with greys, blues, greens And surprisingly reds

Don't involve the estate agent. It's the ladies in the show house you need to speak to. Or even the site agent. Agents have to get you to sign off a satisfaction report on how things have gone and they are under huge pressure to get top marks!
