How much do windows cost??

My husband really wants new windows put in our house but I'm unsure about costs? How much is normal? I've never had home improvements done on our house and I don't want to end up with a dodgy salesman

Any advice welcome!

It depends on how many windows you have, size and style. It also depends on material, and, for example If you are removing wooden Windows for upvc you may also need structural support too.

We asked around the neighbours and used a local firm that everyone recommended

Ask for local recommendations, rather than getting a national firm which will do a hard sales session, quote you something ridiculous and then offer a huge discount to a price which is still way more than you could get by shopping around.

But be aware that windows can be expensive, depending on what you want/need. I had my original (large, rotten, rattly and draughty) Victorian sash windows replaced with hardwood double glazed sash windows and they cost well over £1,000 a piece.

Just don't use the huge firms that advertise on TV.

They are apt to say e.g., 'Normally the cost would be £10k, but JUST FOR TODAY, if you sign up now, I can do it for five.'

I had quotes from one of these firms about 30 years apart, and they were STILL using exactly the same tactics!

Someone phoned me to ask why I hadn't placed an order, so I told her these tactics were enough to put off anyone who wasn't completely thick and naive, and I couldn't believe they were still using them.

Local firm recommendations from friends/neighbours who are happy are the way to go.

We've had a quote to replace our sash bay window (which admittedly is huge) of £7k! Currently getting other quotes.

7 basic Windows and 3 doors cost us 7k. When you look at window fitters just tell them to have no interest in the sales patter, you already want to buy Windows so if he could stick to the facts re type and price rather than trying to talk you into buying windows

Kirinm - If the bay is made up of 5 or 6 individual sashes, I'm afraid that sounds like pretty much the going rate for wooden, double glazed sashes, which is at least £1k per sash. I couldn't find a decent/specialist firm doing them for less round here.

it depends on what you want. We kept our wooden frames for our bay sash window and had new double glazing put in. it was around 4600 for two bay windows.
