Small dormer windows in loft - what's the point?

We are considering a loft conversion.

The drawings we have seen so far propose two skinny titchy dormer windows.

I just don't see the point of them and would rather just avoid them and go for velux windows if we can't have much bigger dormers.

Can someone explain to me how v small dormers are of any use?

To give you head height when standing at the loo?

Svalberg do you give the neighbours a show when you're using the loo? And the OP, maybe it's to make the structural work simpler, you can usually cut a couple of rafters without the roof falling down, but any more and you'd need to support the ridge with a beam.
If you'd prefer velux in that case then just tell the architect.

Quieter when it's raining? The view?

If it's in our loft conversion, there's no chance of anyone being able to see in! We had to add the extra headroom when the 6' 4"male of the house pointed out that he'd have to crouch to pee with the planned velux windows where they were, and so they were changed for dormers, and the toilet was moved to be under the window.

We had one in our original loft. It was rubbish as you couldn't use the wall for anything. It gives more headroom locally but unless you plan on standing at the window a lot it really makes the space difficult to use. We've just redone the loft and now have one large dormer on one side and velux on the other. The space now feels much better!!
