Can I varnish or similar over paint?

I have painted my kitchen cupboards with Valspar wood paint but it seems to be really soft and liable to chipping even from my nails if I catch them on the paint.
Is there anything that I can put over it to make is more hard wearing?

A hard coating over a soft one will crack and "crocodile" (q.v.)

Try contacting the maker's helpline.

If you know how to take the doors off you might try lying them outdoors on a sunny day (warning, this might cause blistering)

I'm so disappointed. It's expensive paint and I've already painted most of the doors.
I contacted Valspar but they said speak to b and q where we bought it from so will do so today.
I read about an emulsion varnish or decorators glaze which looked OK, have u heard of it?

I think that's intended to make it easier to wipe clean matt, absorbent surfaces.

I would be wondering, in a kitchen, if there was any trace of greasy film remaining on the doors before you painted.

I painted a table in Valspar and sprayed a polyurethane spray over the top to harden it up.
Worked fine and the only difference was that it looked shinier which I wasn't bothered about.

I made the mistake of using valspar paint to paint a unit in a clients bathroom.
It was crap.
I'd prepped it correctly.
I had to remove the paint, sand nd prep it again, and repainted with an oil based satinwood instead.
1 year on and doing great.
Was a bloody nightmare.
