Where would you put dining table?

We are having an l-shaped kitchen diner playroom built. Just wondered where people would put the dining area and where to have playroom( Thinking a sofa, TV and loads of storage to put all their toys in)?

We'll be having a 3m bifold door onto the garden.

I would put the playroom in the room labelled study, then you won't see the mess. I would have the dining table next to the bifolds with the length of the table perpendicular to the back wall, with a bench on the kitchen side and chairs on the wall side. I would have a couch in the other half of the dining area, but in the middle of the room with its back to the door leading to the hallway (and maybe a console table behind it if there is room), so it creates a space that isn't a thoroughfare.

Dining table and chairs opposite the kitchen and the sofa, TV etc away in the other part (next to the lounge). If you're carrying plates from the kitchen, you don't want to have to pick your way through toys / clutter to get to the table. Similarly, if you have (adult) friends over for a meal / lunch then the adults can kind of be in the kitchen dining space (and you can be cooking etc) and the children can play in the play room part.

Great points! I'd personally love to have playroom where it's marked study but unfortunately that's probably going to be room for live-in nanny when I go back to work next year.

My only thoughts for having sofa on the bifold side is that you can lounge and watch kids when playing in the garden. You can watch a bit of TV while preparing a meal etc. Of course the downsides are I'll also be able to see piles of toys!

Agree with dining table opposite the kitchen and with a bench on the kitchen side, it will open it up. Like the arrangement in the photo.
I'd also try and keep as many toys out of your lovely new kitchen as possible. They spread!

Agree I'd put the table next to the kitchen and the sofa round the corner. You need table close to kitchen units or it'll drive you demented having to pick through toys every time you go to and fro between kitchen and table.

If you go with the built in booth seating (which I'm not too sure about, I think a table central in the middle of the "zone" might work better), get a pedestal type table. You need people to be able to slip onto the benches, and table legs in corners as in your photo don't allow that.

Yes, a bench on the kitchen side opens up the room I think.

My two pennies worth ... A good nanny will want a larger room they can chill in too and their own shower room . So add in a general loo for everyone else and space for a washer dryer under the stairs .. And keep the shower room just for Nanny use. (After Nanny gone - lounge can be lounge again and shower room can be a laundry / utility )Knock through the study to create a kitchen lounge diner with plenty of room for an eating corner next to breakfast pantry and fridge. And views of garden from front door to add to the open feel.

Leave plenty of room for lounge tv and play area so you can see the children while you cook or relax etc .

This might need a narrow support column in the island to support RSJ where you have taken wall out ( speak with a SE ) but gives you a different option to consider !

Wow! Oneplan so creative! I wish I had that kind of vision!! We have gone back and forth with whether or not to open up the whole space as that would be ideal!! However I'm really keen to have an "adult space" especially as kids get older! So would like to keep lounge separate. We can't fit toilet under stairs as its a turning staircase so ceiling mostly around 1.2 m. The highest height of the ceiling is where the front door is. Though I did consider jack and Jill doors for nanny to use for more privacy. But have heard not so positive things from people who have them!!

This is a 3D view of the kitchen. The designer suggested having seating on the shorter side of the island so you're looking out onto the garden and you don't have chairs clashing from dining table.

Shame about the lack of under stairs - I was figuring on each step being 200mm so allowing more height where I drew the loo and basin !

The lounge would become an adult space again when the nanny has gone - so when the children hit teens I assume ?!

( I think most Nannys Would want their own personal bathroom space as a basic necessity - sharing it with the rest of the family wouldn't be something most would consider reasonable - but you may find some who are not so bothered ?! )

We're having a similar space but putting the kitchen in the corner of the L (where your bifolds are) so that we can have the dining area next to the kitchen - in the interior bit of the L - and the sitting area looking over the garden (where your kitchen is). Our layout is slightly different though as we have the hallway extending through where your study is so that you can access the sitting area without walking through the kitchen.
