Me and DH are finally buying our first home 😄 We're moving in two weeks. Does anyone have any good tips for moving to make the whole thing as smooth as possible? We're doing it ourselves with a rented van, so no removal company! Other than that though, what should we be doing to make our lives easier?

Make sure all your bedding is easily available.

As soon as your bed is in place make it up.

There is nothing worse than being knackered at the end of a long & tiring day of moving & having to make up your bed and/ot hunting for the pillows!

Have a massive declutter before / whilst packing.

Label all boxes so you can just dump boxes in kitchen / sitting room etc

Keep clothes on hangers and put in ikea bags and just hang straight back up in new house. I also keep things in their drawers and just move the drawers and carcass separately if doing myself in a van (otherwise too heavy usually) and that saves on the packing/unpacking.

As PP said - when I move I change the bedding a day or so before moving so can just take the duvet and sheets and pillows in one bundle and put straight on new bed.

Have cleaning stuff and screwdrivers etc handy so you can do a clean and rebuild flat pack furniture.

You need THE box.
The box should go in your car where it can't get lost.
The box should contain the following items:
Kettle
Tea bags
Milk
Biscuits
Phone chargers
Take away menu
Toilet roll
Cleaning products
At least one set of clean undies each
Deodorant
Shower gel
Toothbrushes and toothpaste
Two plates, two sets of cutlery, two mugs

That way, if you can find nothing else in your packing when you get there you can eat, go to the loo, shower and get dressed in the morning.

Also completely agree on the bedding thing. V good idea.

Start packing and decluttering now, it takes longer than you think. Be ruthless with clutter.

Make sure you have enough boxes and packing material, you always need more than you think.

Do not overfill the boxes so they are too heavy to carry.

Put your duvet cover and pillowcase on before the move freshly washed so you just have to chuck a sheet on

Book a grocery shop to deliver the day you move in or day after

I've moved a lot !! My top tips

Label really well . So not just kitchen but what's in the box.

If you have a garage at the new house move boxes into there in piles for each room ( then out the furniture into the house and it won't feel overwhelming with the boxes too)

Have a sort out as you are packing ( last move I visited the tip 7 times and haven't missed anything I got rid of.

Start packing early. I always pack away things I'm not using such as winter clothes or books well before time.

If you have stuff to go in a loft put it in plastic storage boxes ready to go straight up into storage up there.

Make sure you have curtains for your bedroom so that you can get a good nights sleep and a lay in.

I use a move as a good way to clear the food cupboard too - bottle of manky looking sweet chill paste from 2011? Bin.

If you are using cardboard boxes cut carry handles in to them

Start packing and decluttering early. You will have to make several more trips to the tip than you think, and each one will take AGES as - due to summer holidays etc- people are all taking their garden waste down at the moment. We've queued for an hour just to get into our local tip this summer.

Taking furniture apart also takes longer than you think. Keep screws etc together in small sandwich bags, sellotaped to the item they go with.

Take photos of the meters for meter readings when you leave your place and on arrival at the new one.

Keep red wine handy. It can be drunk warm and will taste incredible with the 11pm curry you will inevitably order on moving-in day, as you haven't had chance to eat all day. Good luck!
