help me decide: flooring for narrow hallway (30s terrace)

Currently we have awful laminate, which I want to replace. Stairs are carpeted. The kitchen diner, which leads off the hallway (no door) has a white lacquered bamboo floor - for various reasons we don't want this in the hallway too. I'm tempted to go with pale grey patterned tiles. DH is not too keen as he thinks patterned tiles will look odd in a non-Victorian/Arts & Crafts house. Will it?

Also, we're planning on moving on in the next few years, so would it be better to go for something neutral and classic (wooden floor)? Any other suggestions?

Have some modern patterned tiles? Like the geometric stuff from popham design? What us budget?

We are about to do the same and are going for the traditional Minton style tile in a 1924 house. They were still putting this type of flooring in 30s houses. Tops Tiles have some lovely modern takes on the traditional designs.

Something like this would be gorgeous.
