Original Stained Glass Windows - double glazing?

We currently have the original single glazed and stained glass windows.
Unfortunately the timbers are in very bad condition, so we are looking to change the windows.

We would love to keep the original stained glass windows, and have heard about taking the original stained glass windows and enclosing them with a double glazed unit.

Has anyone had this done? Are you happy with the results? Any idea of cost would be useful.

Also any recommendation for glazers in south East London?

It actually ends up as triple glazing - it's called encapsulation. Our previous house had it - looked great and added to the character. I suspect it is expensive.

I am interested as well. No original stained glass here but would rather use reclaimed stained glass than the modern stuff. I imagine bespoke stained glass is even more!

Snap, same here - almost every (original) window sealed with umpteen layers of paint. Except for the one window that can't quite close fully because of layers of paint inside the frame.

Yes - we have some of that going on Elements. They are original metal framed casements set into wooden window frames. They look lovely. You just can't open the damn things.

We had this done on the stained glass in our front door. It works really well and is even easier to clean! The carpenter who built our new door did it. I can probably find his details but he was in South End which could be too far out for you.

mrsmortis Did you keep the original front door too? I'm staring at my front door trying to visualise how a double-glazed unit would fit into the hole.

So... have rang a few places, and just for 10 stained glass windows the cost is c7k! That doesn't include the double glazing for the non stained glass areas!

7K! What size windows is that for? Ours are small panes at the top of the bay, but there are 8 panes (2 bay windows). Doubt we will ever get it done especially as we hate UPVC so will be even more expensive.
