Bed under Window?

We are mid way through an extension including a new bedroom for us. Realised last night (now it's built and we can see the dimensions / doors etc) that the best use of space will be to have our bed under the window.

It's a new room, all properly insulated etc, the headboard just comes to below the Window but it's a very wide Window (about 220cm) and the bed is 150cm so there'll be more window either side. Will have a made to measure blackout blind fitted into the recess.

Does anyone have this set up and does it work? Worried about it being cold and / or light coming in. Builder needs to know position of radiator etc ASAP so we really need to decide how furniture will sit.

Any advice welcome!

I think it would be fine as long as the blind is close fitting and good quality.

Its fine we've slept like this for 15 years. Not cold just have decent lined curtains

geo how does it work with curtains - do you tuck them behind the bed when you draw them? That's why I'm thinking roman blind because the bed would be flat against the wall (so no space for curtains between bed and wall)?

This wouldn't bother me as long as 1. The radiator was on another wall 2. Room wasn't east facing as morning sun can be so bright 3. I would have to have a recessed blind not curtains and lastly the bedroom door was at the other end of the room as for some reason I can't sleep unless I can see anyone coming into the room.
My first house had the bed under the window and I never had a problem with it.

Is it a room with a view? That's the only thing that would put me off.....not being able to lie in bed and appreciate it.

Yes, west facing (I think), door opposite bed, and was thinking blind as mentioned above.

The foot end of our bed is by the window, but far enough away from the wall so that we can get the curtains behind the foot board. That works for us - we have a view which we can sit and look at, and any draughts are on our feet not our head. It was a bit weird getting used to having our heads away from the wall, but it works really well. Though you do need a bed where you are happy to look at the back of the headboard.

A well-fitting blackout blind in the recess, and perhaps a more ornamental blind towards the room as well, and modern dg windows, will greatly reduce cold. However the window will never be as good an insulator as your walls and ceilings, so there will be a flow of cool air downwards. You will probably feel it on your face.

Not sure how the height of your headboard will match the height of the windowboard. You might need something made to order. I have seen headboards fixed to the wall rather than the bed, and integrated with bedside cabinets.

I think any curtains would have to rest on the windowboard. Again you might want an unusually deep one to allow that.

We have our bed under our window, and the window is only a few inches bigger than the bed. We have a blackout blind which we close at night, plus a pair of curtains which we don't close, its just to stop the light coming around the edge of the blind. We also have a muslin curtain for privacy. Its a bit of a faff fighting with all the layers, plus the blind was from Dunelm so a cheapy, but was all we could afford, so is possibly doesn't have the best mechanism, but we get a good nights sleep and aren't woken at the crack of dawn anymore :)

Thanks all - the window is in, but its still to have 1st fix (is that what it's called?!) so no window sill at the moment, no plaster, no radiator - all of that needs to be decided today (so no pressure then, hence me resorting to MN as H has no idea !).

We don't have a head board yet, the bed was bought (low divan) a couple of months ago and we were waiting until we moved into new room to order headboard - so that will work well getting something made / fixed to the wall.

Am thinking of getting window sill made flush with the wall (i.e. so no overhang) ro a blind could potentially go outside of the recess and overlap the sides and the bottom ever so slightly to minimise draughts?! Would that work?

IMO a blind is better for draughts and insulation if it hangs tight to the frame. This will give an inch or two space to the glass, which is fine.

You can then put a curtain outside the reveal if you wish, either now or in the distant future.

Personally I would only want to use a blackout blind after dark or when sleeping.
