Building work & insurance excluding any accidental damage

We're having a loft extension done and my home insurer has informed me that while the work is going on we won't be covered for any accidental damage, even if it's not connected to the work. Is this normal? It makes me very nervous!

Yup, accidental damage exclusion was a condition when we had works done. They also excluded storm damage whilst the roof was being worked on. Tried other insurers but no one wanted t take it on until the works were complete
