Stained wood kitchen

I would like to update our somewhat boring oak kitchen and have it stained; not painted but stained blue so that the wood grain still showed. Something along these lines uk.pinterest.com/pin/419538521517564298/

Have you done it? Is it more labour-intensive than painting? What product can you recommend? I have found two in the UK, Pirttie holmanpaints.co.uk/products/148-pirtti.html and Osmo www.osmouk.com/sitechaptern.cfm?bookid=Products&chapter=82&page=263# - one waterborne acrylic, the other oil-based. Pros and cons of water vs oil-based stains?

Any advice will be gratefully received.
