We're putting an extension on soon - it'll make the kitchen about 6m by 6m. So far that's all that's decided!

We're chucking ideas around about:
an island or* peninsula thingy
underfloor heating or not
patio doors or
bifold
*utility room or not bothering

And, erm... everything else!

Utility room or a cupboard at the very least for your washing machine/TD to cut down on the noise.

I like have a run of plenty of worktop.

Large drawers so much more useful than cupboards.

Terryscombover · 14/05/2016 20:37

Island and, for us, the bifold doors. Sloping glass roof mini extension and small garden mean they have been fabulous.

Also one of those retractable cooker hoods. Gives a lovely clean line.

PlaymobilPirate · 14/05/2016 20:42

Terry the architect who came last week said lots of people disliked bifolds and were having them taken out!

Built in microwave - yes we lost a cupboard but it is off the side and looks so neat

Ceiling height cupboards - at the time I thought why do we need them it's going to be a pain going up and down a step ladder - turns out we keep all the cleaning stuff and alcohol up there way out of dds reach and actually not that annoying.

Kr1stina · 14/05/2016 20:56

I love everything about my kitchen layout

Sink, food waste bin, dishwasher and dish storage all beside each other so I can rinse plates, stack in machine and unload without taking a step

Aga, pots and pans , Fridge , food prep area and prep sink all beside each other

Food all in large pantry No searching for food in various cupboards

Extra deep worktop means I can have things like bread bin and knife block sitting out and still have room to work

Bi fold doors - 4 liner meters of full length window that open up to the garden

All the crap is in the utility room and the kitchen looks lovely

Kr1stina · 14/05/2016 20:59

I also have tall wall cupboards and use them for rarely used items . That's not alcohol in this house Wink

Thecazelets · 14/05/2016 21:11

Love the island with hob so I can cook looking out into the room. U floor heating, utility room. And also 6m run of bifolds looking out over the garden. But the end one opens like a normal door so I can let the dcs out without opening the whole thing up (unlike the crap ones we had in our last house!

PlaymobilPirate · 14/05/2016 21:13

Kr1stina I'm hoping to put in a big corner pantry type cupboard to keep all the food in. DP likes to stock pile rice and pasta in case of a zombie attack I think and we currently have one tiny food cupboard which drives him mad!

Walk in pantry with double doors.
Built in wine fridge
Deep pan drawers instead of cupboards (nothing ever lost at the back)
High ceiling with cupboards up to it, need a stool to reach them by great for hiding stuff that gets used once a year.

Thecazelets · 14/05/2016 21:16

(Not strictly layout but also love having sink and hanging space in the utility room, deep drawers, induction hob, boiling water tap, american fridge with ice maker and granite worktops. All things I didn't know were fab until we bought this house and which had kindly been thought of by the previous owners!)

Ellypoo · 14/05/2016 21:23

I would def have underfloor heating if I could - tiled floor is so cold in winter/mornings.

All the above though - def a utility room or cupboard if you can though - really good to keep washing out of view & cut the noise down.

Plenty of work top & I really wish I could have a bigger fridge for wine , big drawer to hide bin & recycling away is a plus in my kitchen too, and love the natural light from our big French doors into conservatory & skylight/light tunnel too.

FanSpamTastic · 14/05/2016 21:27

I have a cupboard that the granite work surface extends into. It has a plug point at the back and is my toaster and bread cupboard. I can wipe all the crumbs from the cup board straight into the sink.

I would have loved a proper pantry!

pinkpetrol · 14/05/2016 21:27

I love our bifold doors but equally i would have been as happy with patio doors! I wish we had underfloor heating. Our kitchen/diner is freezing in the winter. If we could have had a utility room i would have loved one, i still get cross that we dont. We have white granite worktops that stain I would have had corian and paid the extra (friends have it and it is amazing). I love our pantry but wish we had lighting in it. I hate the fact that the cutlery drawer is under the hob its a pain.

MyFriendsCallMeOh · 14/05/2016 21:36

I live in the USA and these slide out appliance stations are popular, some people use them for kettles / toasters as well as coffee machines.

Oops, image fail!

What do you LOVE about your kitchen layout?
RoseBud2016 · 14/05/2016 21:40

We love having a separate utility room with a sink and washing machine in it plus plenty of cupboard space in it. The utility room also has a fridge freezer in it. We then have a separate undercounter fridge in our kitchen. When our kitchen designer suggested it we were a bit like Hmm but now we couldn't live without the extra fridge!

Also rather than an island we went for a long U shaped kitchen with bar stools along one side- it's very sociable whilst controlling the "flow" of people moving around the kitchen.

No bifold doors- French doors work perfectly for us.

Finally we couldn't be without our corian worktop- solid, no visible joins at all, completely integrated sink and best of all..... It can be gently polished with a specialist mild abrasive to remove stains and scratches (unlike granite or any other solid worktop) It was expensive but worth every penny!

mineofuselessinformation · 14/05/2016 21:43

Make sure you don't put appliances to near to corners as you will then struggle with doors.
Also consider making sure you have planned your storage so it's convenient when emptying the dishwasher, etc.
I have a boiler in a wall cupboard, but it's so low the worktop underneath is pretty much useless, so if I have my kitchen re-done, I will look into having it in a full height cupboard with storage underneath.

sparechange · 14/05/2016 22:18

I love:
Bi-fold doors - they've been open all day and make the garden seem an extension of the kitchen, especially when we've got lots of people in the kitchen
Deep double sinks
Boiling water tap
Pull out larder cupboards
Deep drawers for pans under the hob
Pull out spice drawers
Wine fridge
Tall cupboard with sockets so I can charge the cordless dyson out of sight

Best of all, I love the sofa! All future kitchen designs will incorporate space for a sofa...

magimedi · 14/05/2016 22:25

My bin is under the sink & not freestanding.

It is similar to this

I love the fact that al lthe trash is hidden.

PlaymobilPirate · 14/05/2016 22:29

Some fantastic ideas. Might re-think the bifold doors.

spare I can't picture how big ours is going to be. I'd love room to put a sofa!

Terryscombover · 14/05/2016 22:30

Hello Op. Yes re people not liking them.

We had solar reflective coating on them and the roof otherwise we would cook ourselves!!!

And we have good underfloor heating for the winter!!!

I think it only works because we have a town house. Not too wide!!! And ours work. A friends never worked properly and she changed them for crittle (?) Windows. Beautiful!!!

alltheworld · 14/05/2016 22:31

I want a peninsula and French doors. Architect says island and bifold. But the room will be smallish kitchen diner so feel that is too much.

yomellamoHelly · 14/05/2016 22:41

Nr of "openings" (includes a stretch of bifolds, patio doors and velux windows) and the light and sun they let in. Flooring. Breakfast bar. Drawers under the hob. Decent oven. Layout that stops me walking round in circles endlessly.
