Has anyone had a gas meter moved?

In order to accommodate washing machine and tumble dryer under the stairs, we need to move our gas meter, electricity meter and fuse board approx 50cm. We can't get a straight answer out of NPower about whether they can do it and how much it will cost. Heating engineer who came today to move our boiler says they will probably want us to move it outside and charge c.1500 for the privilege, but he has a mate who will move it to where we want it for a fraction of the price. Am very tempted obviously and not worried about safety as I'd check that his work was guaranteed etc, but I am a bit worried about building control/survey when we come to sell etc. Has anyone done this successfully?

Not sure if it helps but Southern Gas Networks (SGN) charged me £800 to connect a new gas supply that involved digging up the road, sticking a mole in the ground to run 25m and then rise into a new external cabinet and then making good. It maybe cheaper for them to run a new connection to the outside rather than move an existing.

Thank you! Issue is that SGN say if we are moving it less than 1m, NPower can do it, but NPower are denying all knowledge!

Silly question, can you move it more than a metre?

MyLlamasGoneBananas · 06/05/2016 07:27

Change to a more helpful gas supplier maybe? Find a supplier happy to move it for you.

Could maybe move it more than 1m but not sure new position would then be practical owing to angle of stairs. Contacting diff supplier vg idea, thanks!
