As title. AHHHH. I'm sick writing this - the bath was FULL of what has to be, human waste, this morning. With tide marks, so a good bit of water must have come up too.

We are only in this rent house two months. The bathroom is new!!!!

Oh gross!!!!!!!

I'm afraid to use any sink in the house now, I'm competent and utterly ick-ified uughh

And I've a 2yo and a 7mo who will need bathing ...

I haven't cleaned it yet oh Jesus

The small loo - DP came in saying it looks like Bobby sands has been .... He was going to accuse my mother, who is visiting for the weekend, for the mess!!!!!!

Calling landowner and hopefully emergency plumber (it's Saturday..... Oh man)

Oh god I'm so grossed out now.

There is one little duck floating on the shit in the bath.

This means we have a major plumbing problem right?

We've had no heavy rains and the septic tank was dealt with two weeks ago!

The only time we had that happen was when the line going from the house to the Septic tank was blocked. Nothing we had flushed was responsible, it was that there wasn't enough drop between the house and the new septic tank. The builder had to come out and lower the line to make the drop steeper. Never had that again in 20 years. Hope the landlord sorts it soon, it's nasty.

We've just had a similar issue. We were getting a bad drain/eggy smell inside our house. The downstairs toilet then stopped flushing properly and we realised the drains must be blocked and called an engineer to come and look. In the meantime we also noticed our clothes were coming out the washing machine with a similar smell. Well needless to say our drains were blocked and our washing machine is plumbed right next to where the manhole cover is so the drainage distance is not far at all! You can only imagine my horror when he said its unlikely the water from the washing machine was draining properly and could have backed up .

He told me that all waste from shower, sinks, toilet dishwasher etc went into that drain so when it blocks and its bad it can back up. He did say its unusual for it to affect upstairs bathrooms though because of the distance.

I'm off to go boil wash all our clothes today... Hope you get fixed soon.

Oh no advice for you but sympathy

I wouldn't even know where to start.

Fortunately it is a rental so this is for the landlord to sort.

Gem - gah you're in our hell too then.

Plumber been and gone. Rodded and unblocked, basically the drop isn't deep enough and the pipes should ideally be outside before everything connects.

So, the bad block is gone and the house is clean. The landlord management is sending another crowd to unblock again on Monday; we said that isn't necessary, the problem is the sewage backs up to the bath?- and we got a lot of 'I've never heard of that / been using our plumber for 20 years that's never happened before' etc etc.

Needless to say we didn't find that acceptable!!

Yep it's been pretty grim!

Glad you're sorted for now. We were also told its likely to happen again because of the way the drains have been designed on the street ... Gross.

Oh god, bleugh! Hoes the laundry going?

I didn't explain well in my post - basically the agency is acknowledging there was a problem but saying here is no architectural/structural issue with the design of the plumbing - which is exactly what the emergency plumber said there WAS!

How can it be considered sanitary when if the toilet backs up it comes up the bath??

We are contacting the owners (not agency) on Tuesday.

Same as happened to our new build then, not enough drop in the pipes. Ours was solved by them digging up the ground from the edge of the house to the tank and draining the tank, then making a new connection into the tank, lower than the old one and sealing up the old one. Out tank was made of cement and the man from the county stood over the lot and gave approval and a certificate to say it was done to standards or whatever it's called. It did mean the tank held slightly less but it all worked out well, not problems for 20 years we lived with it.

I forget what load we are on now but the washing machine has been running pretty much constantly since yesterday!

How can the agency deny there is a problem when you've had sewage in your bath?! And a plumber said there was a problem? Hopefully you get more luck with the owners.

Unfortunately we don't rent and in situations like this sometimes I really wish we did! I think I would probably be moving because there's not an awful lot we can do to change the drains outside. The thought of sewage spilling through my washing machine or dishwasher makes me feel physically ill. I expect to wake up one day and find the downstairs swamped in sewage (maybe a tad dramatic but its really grossed me out)

If the pipes between the house and the septic tank become blocked, the sewage then backs up the pipes and can come up through the Plug holes and toilets in the house.
If the emergency plumber has been and rodded the drains and cleared the blockage they should be fine. Some drains block easier than others because they don't have enough fall (drop) so stuff won't run away quickly, some have tight bends or roots blocking them.

However, (DH and plumbing relatives say) drains mostly get blocked because people flush San pro, nappies, wet wipes and the like. Add fat and detergent residue into the mix and you get a clog.
To avoid a repeat performance, only flush pee, poo and paper and try to avoid tipping lots of cooking oil or fat down the sink. Especially if you have a septic tank.
