Velux windows - can you really get blinds that block the light?

We are having a loft conversion and will be having velux windows in addition to normal ones.

We struggle to sleep in a light room and I'm interested to know how you darken the room. Can you buy special blinds? Do they really work?

I imagine this sounds quite ridiculously ignorant, so please do forgive in advance... I have no experience of velux windows!

Yes, I think they quite often come with blackout blinds as part of the unit. They seem pretty effective.

Yes velux make blackout blinds or you can get some that fit from John Lewis. We have the JL ones and they're good. Just a tiny sliver of light at the bottom but pretty effective. I'll try to link.

Yes we had velum windows fitted and bought blinds separately from a website. They are brilliant! The blind clips into the window and it is absolutely black when they are fully down. We even got a remote control one for the window that is an awkward corner. I can't remember which website as it was a while ago.

I find that the blackout blinds on velux units are especially good because they're contained within rails and no light escapes around the edges.

The window will have a code on it. You enter the code on the velux website and order your choice of blackout blind.

I got a navy one and if it is shut and the door closed, the room is pitch black.

We have these and they are amazing. It's the rail part that makes them so effective. I would live to get something similar for out other windows but it dies t exist!

The blinds you buy from Velux are great. However there is a problem on hot nights. You want the window open, not least as rooms at the top of the house are hottest. But light then comes through the opening.

OnePlan: I am definitely buying those for our new house. DH has decided he's super sensitive to light and must sleep in a dark room (this is new, and probably just attention seeking - he has form for this). So this will stop him complaining.

Yes we have the blind system that fits inside a velux. Better to buy the window and blind as a complete package. It can be confusing getting the right blind to retrofit later.

Go the velux website and it shows you them in detail.

We have one that is three ways of using it. It either opens fully, full blackout or a translucent sunblind. Very clever.

Yes; we do. But I don't shut one blind because otherwise it's so dark it's like winter and I always wake up better with a bit of natural light.

Yea we got some cheaper than velux wanted from Hilarys blinds (it might just be a scottish company)

Blinds2go do them as well, fit perfectly in the velux frames and cheaper than velux ones.
