Painting an IKEA kitchen

Has anyone done it?

We need to make a decision on our kitchen in the next week. We have DeVOL taste but on an IKEA budget.

To be fair the IKEA range, in my opinion is excellent but we would like to customise the fronts to our taste by painting/spray painting them. Has anyone done this either professional or DIY?

No but have a look at Shaker doors they do doors that fit ikea carcasses. You can buy ikea kitchens without the doors and this company will do them in any f&b or ral colour you like. When I priced it up it came up reasonable. Hth x

Yes, I have done it recently with rasdal doors (now discontinued). Did it myself, used farrow and ball primer then paint (I have no strong feelings about brands, but the main colour of the room was farrow and ball, and it made it easy to find a neutral that matched, plus I run a busy catering company from home and it is standing up well the rigorous scrubbing).

I have done a non Ikea kitchen using specialist laminate paint. Looked fab but was loads of work to get a perfect/professional finish.

Since then I purchased an incredible top of the range Wagner spray paint system (high power, pneumatic pump etc) which would have reduced time significantly and give immaculate finish (e.g. allowed me to renovate a massive double garage in a day), so if you're doing a lot of work, definitely look at getting one of these.

OP I've also built an Ikea kitchen from scratch (large laundry room) and if o had my time again (and lived in UK) I'd be checking out that place honey linked to. The price list shows the do pre-primed doors that you can then finish yourself...over half of my work time was spent on masking, roughing up and priming when I did my paint job.

We nearly went down the ikea route but honestly I couldn't face the sanding of an al ready lacquered kitchen . It's not just doors it's the plinths end panels etc. We found DIY kitchens do a number of "sanded" ranges and actually more choice of units than Ikea. We went with Broad Oak Sanded and painted in Little Greene Oil Eggshell. Still used ikea sink and interior fittings but that might not be so feasible now they have changed the sizes. Price wise it was about evens.

Like this. The LG oil eggshell is lovely paint, gives a velvety but hardwearing finish. No chips after 3 years.

Raising Thanks for another good solution. I think we checked them out and they were working out more exspensive but will compare again after we've priced up the cost of having the doors pro painted.

In reality we might just have to do it ourselves. The budget is so stretched.....

Yes, I have had three professionally spray-painted with great results.

I got mine from here over 50 door designs, in over 60 colours, sample colour finishes free, sample door to buy, doors/drawers any size you want and end panels etc available. Have had mine for over a year very happy and good value.
