Does this sound a reasonable cost to fit a kitchen

I was quoted £3500 to fit a howdens kitchen, 5 base units, 3 tall units, 8 wall units, built in washer dryer, dishwasher, hob, double oven microwave and cooker hood

Is this the going rate or am i being ripped off?
I stupidly didn't get any other quotes as he seemed a really nice guy and seemed to know his stuff. I did invite others to quote but didn't hear back and i only have 2 weeks to go before our dream kitchen arrives. I'm not sure if its last minute nerves or alarm bells...

Is that including the kitchen?

We've just paid 780 for the fitting of our new kitchen, he's been onsite for 2.5 weeks so it's ridiculously cheap. We are in the E Midlands.

No, the kitchen is 12k and that was with his 75% trade "discount". He also quoted 3 weeks to do it all as there are a lot of pipework i want hidden so he's going to chase it into the walls

TheWildRumpyPumpus how big is your kitchen? Are they doing worktops too? Ours is 6m x 3m and we are having it on all 3 wall in a big U shape so its quite a large kitchen and we are just north of london if that makes any difference

My OH fitted our last kitchen but that was in a tiny flat and pre DCs so i don't have any idea what it should cost

Here's ours. There aren't any wall units but we have a walk in pantry which he also fitted out for that cost.

Hmmm, so £3,500 over 15 working days works out at around £230 per day. If kitchens are his 'thing' and he's good at them then his day rate might well be £200, plus the cost of materials. If I were you I'd agree exactly what you're getting for the cost - does it include electrics and plumbing, plastering, decorating and are you having any extra bits and pieces? Putting cables into walls can be potentially time consuming and require a lot of making good. In the end, IF you feel he's trustworthy, you think he'll do a great job and you can afford it then it might be less grief to take some deep breaths and put the cost to the back of your mind.

Yes we've paid extra for decorator for the whole extension so that's not included in that quote. Who's doing your electrics?

Ok i dont actually know what is included in that quote. We are having a wall knocked through to the dining room (by someone else) so there will be a lot of making good to do (ceilings have holes in from an old leak, pipes are everywhere and unsightly) He is doing all the electrics and plumbing and plastering but i don't know if that is all included. I've asked him to do tiling and relocating the boiler too but i don't think that is included in his quote, it all seems a bit vague and fuzzy now. I've asked break down his quote but haven't heard back from him yet, how long do i give him before it's panic time?

I'm getting a bit panicky now i'd hate to think for that amount i could have got someone else in and a quartz worktop fitted too if he turns out to be a cowboy bit naff. Would it be rude to get a few quotes now as back up?

Definitely find out what's included - we had a bit of confusion between our builder and kitchen guy as to who was doing what - they work together a lot so sorted it between themselves but if you end up with 2 people who don't know each other it could get trickier.

No it's not rude at all. Just try to make sure you're comparing like with like - both the work and likely quality, if you can get a feel for that. I really don't want to panic you, but you might struggle to find somebody decent to do the job with two weeks notice. If you can establish with your existing fitter what exactly he's quoted for then that will put you in a much more informed position. Was he recommended to you? If so, can you speak to anybody who's used him?

Not helpful but when we had arranged to get our kitchen fitted, the bloke was so bad we told him to fuck off and we did it ourselves. Fitting kitchen units isn't too difficult.

Don't get appliances from a kitchen company. You will find they are poor quality and overpriced, even with the huge this-week-only discount. Look up the name on the badge.

sandbags we found him online and he is local to us. I liked the finish of the kitchens he had done previously but i suppose it quite easy to steal good pics and pass them off as your own work

jane we did fit our last kitchen, it was easy but took a while and we didn't need any plumbing and electrics moving. I don't think we could do this one with all the work involved and 2 DCs under 2, would probably take about a year to complete...

I think i'll try and find out as much as i can tomorrow and see what the quote actually includes then try and see if i can get some more like for like quotes

Out fitting cost £2850 that was 2 fitters and took them 8 days. They did a great job and I'd highly recommend them if you're in or near bucks. 4 tall units, 9 wide pan drawers, 4 low cupboards, 6 wall units, some electrics, resiting washing machine, plumbing, install 2 x ovens, dishwasher, hob, sink, worktops and some boxing in and plastering.

That seems a lot.

We had our kitchen done last year. About 18 cupboards, integrated dishwasher and hob, new radiator, plastering, leveling the floor, rebuilt the mess around the built in cooker, shoddy pipework sorted out. Can't remember exactly how much but definitely less than 3k. And done in 2 weeks.

We used someone who had been recommended. After using an unknown plumber for our bathroom, I'd never do that again!

Oh and new skirting board and coving and hacking down the old solid plaster coving that was up. That price included the buying of the new coving and skirting boards too. It's a big room as well so quite a bit was needed.

I need a kitchen fitter recommendation to fit a small kitchen in London N20 probably an IKea kitchen and will need to plaster a cealing, plumb a dishwasher and take a new floor. Can you recommend any one?

Consider how much you need to earn per week. Depending on how much stripping out and making good and disposing of the old units etc but suppose it will take 2weeks i.e. 10 working days. He’s also self employed so needs to factor in a contribution to a few weeks holiday a year and time off at Xmas etc. Heaven forbid if he’s ill for a few days, running costs of his van, public liability insurance. I could go on but I hope you get the gist. Not All Tradesmen are thieves.

Check exactly what he has included in the quote or you might end up with surprises but this doesn't sound unusual to me - i think ours was about the same! However we also got some boiler work done, new windows and doors and so a lot of "finishing" and that was on top of the quote for the kitchen and fitting.

Learn from my mistakes OP & pay for a quality job. I don't think your quote is astronomical compared to the stupid money I'm having to pay to fix all our bodge jobs. Retro-fixing bodges is £££, difficult and time consuming.

I paid £4000 to fit a small Howdens kitchen 6 years ago, including electrics, tiling etc. Your quote seems cheap. Builders' prices have gone up a lot since Covid.
