Suggestions for locations to rent in Manchester

Hi, Does anyone have any suggestions for clean, child-friendly and affordable areas to rent in Manchester (5 mile radius of city centre), which are multi-cultural or at least culturally friendly? Whats Sharston like in Whythenshawe? Anyone live there? Several areas seem to have high crime rate, or overly expensive.

It may have changed or be changing, but I'd avoid much of Wythenshawe. What is your budget? Where do you need to get to for work?

Unless someone needs to be within 5 miles of a place of work I'd say how much time you are prepared to spend commuting would be a better guideline as some places in a 5 mile radius suffer from traffic hell!

Sale is lovely and on the metro link line - Altrincham too ;-)

What other requirements? Loads of good places. 5 miles doesn't quite get to Sale does it, or just?

The most expensive areas are simply linked to the fact they are most desirable as a general rule. Great schools, great community, great public transport links etc

Levenshulme is on the up.

Bury is nice, it's on the tram route, good schools and affordable housing. It's further out than 5 miles and there's less going on than sale/didsbury/altringham but that's reflected in the cost of housing.

We've just bought in Worsley/Walkden area near the Marriott hotel. Prices are reasonable, schools are good, there are direct trains into Manchester from Walkden station and plenty of parks/pubs and local history in Worsley.

I think as others have said, there are so many areas to choose from, it just comes down to priorities (whether you need schools etc) and budget.
