Fridge-freezers - am I missing something?

The freezer compartment of our current fridge has three drawers or more or less equal depth. It strikes me as such a stupid design because you end up with ice trays in the top drawer which means that a. you can't put anything else in there and it wastes space, and b. you end up spilling water everywhere when you put the ice tray in. My previous one had a very shallow shelf at the top for ice trays, which was so much better - but most of the ones I'm looking at seem to have the same deep-drawer design and no shelf. Is this a thing now? How is one supposed to freeze and store ice?

Use ice cube bags (I don't mean ready frozen ice cubes, but bags you fill up with water and then freeze to make ice cubes) problem solved.

Put the trays on top of the stuff in the top drawer.

jilly that shallow tray was for open freezing too, very handy. Wish they were more available.

Mine has built in ice trays. They're the drawer pulls. It's not a fancy one

Thanks all. I'm not a fan of ice cube bags for some reason, nor of buying bags of ice - I find the cubes less naice than ones made in ice trays. And putting trays on top of stuff won't work for us because we don't have flat things in our freezer to put them on (we just don't buy frozen things in boxes). Maybe I need to acquire a fish finger habit?

What about a tray with a lid? I have a Tupperware version. No leaks then?

You can just balance the ice cube trays on things. Non-boxed things!
If you're worried about spilling them, put them in the night before, and they'll be frozen by morning.

Ah, now trays with lids are a good idea! We currently balance them and it's shit - end up with wonky ice cubes Sad

I still think a shallow shelf is much the best solution though. What are you supposed to do if you want to freeze a batch of falafel or something?

Literally everything in our freezer is round/odd-shaped, or it seems that way - bags of frozen veg, chicken carcasses, bags of mince from the butcher, soup tubs with stock in etc.

Neither do we. Just balance them on your leftovers. Had ever occurred to me that someone wouldn't be able to work this out

Swedishedith I KNOW, but literally nothing in our freezer is flat. And lamu don't get me started - DP complains that our ice is not clear enough for his mixology aspirations.

Our freezer is just over a year old and is frost free and has a lovely narrow gray half way down for ice. Not sure on make but it was about £300 and is 5ft tall. Bought online from markselectrical.

You don't need flat stuff to balance them on, just vaguely level out your non flat stuff and it still works. As long as you don't need to open the freezer until they are pretty solid.

Here's someone demonstrating ones like mine, although mine are pale blue which I find more aesthetically pleasing. It's an indesit freezer.

I usually put the ice cube trays on a baking tray (Swiss roll tin type with a lip all round) then balance that on top of things. If you can get organised enough you can freeze the trays then decant the cubes into a bag so they last a while before you need to refill the trays.
